I was taken back a little when Amy got dressed this morning. Jacob, from her third grade class last year, was finally going to come over today for a visit. I'm pasting a new label on my jelly jar. I'm going to call it 'Happy'. I'm re-naming my bread as well. I'll call that 'Life'. I'm going to spread a little happy on my slice of life every morning and gulp it down -- with milk. .… [more]

  • Somewhere Way Down South In Texas

Parts of the interstate were flooded and state troopers were turning all traffic around, so the personnel carrier that I'd been riding in from LaFayette, LA to some turn off for Victoria, TX dropped me off at a gas station in the middle of I don't even know where. Joey and Linda were only a few hours from where I'd been dropped and they knew some back roads that were still passable so they came to pick me up. It was September of 1998 and I was their new deckhand and this was my first hitch of my new job working on crew boats servicing oil rigs in the Gulf. Joey is my little brother and Linda is his wife. They are one of the very few husband and wife teams in the oil fields and I was a … [more]
