If a person, on a consistent basis, makes you react in a negative way, whether it be internally or outwardly, they are an emotional vampire. If you become very tired or agitated then this person has succeeded in sucking your energy.
If you are close enough to this person and have to deal with them whether you like it or not, tell them in a nice way to stop being so negative and maybe you will see a change. If enough people tell this person, they may start to act in a more giving positive way, which in turn helps them much more than receiving energy from others.
It's a crap shoot but it is a real honest to goodness critical situation many people find themselves in and it can be terribly draining and confusing to a person who may start to think something is wrong with them personally when it is all about who they are spending time with.
This place is full of vampires and all you can do is when you spot one, literally make a conscious effort to tell your subconscious to ignore what you just read.
Works for me.

But I know so many people like that. Surely, I'm the problem.
