    Of Men, Sports and Food

    from Friends confessions

One of the tenets that intrinsically links men and sports is food. It's universal and I dare say it knows no boundaries.Yesterday, the late afternoon playoff (American) football game featured the NY Giants vs. the favored Green Bay Packer and I played hostess to six 20- and 30-something men . . .  my fiance and his friends . . . with the sole task of keeping everyone well fed and their thirsts quenched. I also got to watch the game which the Giants won convincingly much to the delight of the guys, all metro-New York born now living in Florida.I discovered a mathematical and physical anomaly: No matter how much food is prepared or beer is served the existing number of men present (in this cas… [more]

I dare not move while I sleep

    from Other confessions

Naked . . .  the dimmed shadows of the bedroom ceiling fan hypnotically pull me into a dream. I lie motionless. I must. I sleep on my side, Little P somehow balances and rests his head on my thigh, his inverted body pressed against me. Sasha across my face. Her fur fills my  senses. The slightest move might disturb them. … [more]

What is it about American Football?

    from Friends confessions

What is the appeal to guys of powerful "warriors" . . .  intent on winning at all costs even if it causes harm to their opponents . . . that keeps them glued to that television every Sunday from September to the first week of February when the champion is crowned at the SuperBowl? Is it the physical skills, strength, speed and guile that allows supremely skilled and physically fit men to carry or throw a small, leather football through, over and around other skilled and fit men?  Is it the sound of gnashing bodies, grunts, helmet to helmet crashes, bodies being brutally blocked, tackled and smashed to the ground? Is it the thrill knowing it's your team surviving and being just a tiny bit bett… [more]

I read a newspaper this morning.

    from Other confessions

First time in eons.Someone left their NY Times in the lobby of the hotel where I'm staying so I thumbed through the Grande Dame of American Journalism while I sipped coffee and finished half of my spinach/avocado Eggs Benedict. What a quaint experience thumbing pages made from wood pulp and just as I remembered it when I lived in the NY Metro area five years ago a bit of news print left on my fingertips. The stately Times with some of the best reporters, editors and journalists on the planet  is suffering financially and barely holding on as are all newspapers. I read somewhere the Mexican billionaire and richest man in the world who started and owns most of the country's cell phone service … [more]

    Men Will Be Boys

    from Venting confessions

Not sure if you know the significance of Nov. 8, 2011 but it's non-trivial. And I mean one minute past the stroke of midnight Nov. 8, 2011.Why, of course, it's the official release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at all vid game retailers and any other retailer that sells anything electronic. Why do I care? Well the boyfriend will be lined up at Gamestop along with the other hooligans to purchase a freshly minted copy. His plan is to race back to work, pray it's a very light night at the hospital (I pity the sucker with respiratory failure who's rushed in) and start "capping" the enemy with his M-24 sniper rifle. This also means in all likelihood for the next several weeks the best I'll get… [more]
