The Lake Of The Fae (Fae Lake Dream)
The water was cold, but that wasn’t it. Whenever I come here, the water is cold. I think it was the fact that the water was dangerous this time, dangerous in a way I had never expected.
The lake. So familiar. I have never been to it in real life, never seen it in a movie, but I know this lake. I know every inch of it. The murky water and the croaking frogs, all down in a steeply walled valley. Oh, yes, I knew this lake.
This time was different. The water was clearer and families played by the water. And when children sank into the depths, never to come up, everyone ignored it. Even the parents and lifeguards. Some guys, I feel close to them, they are friends, they look like the Monty Python guys. We decide to waterboard. A small pan, a foot and a half long, strapped to my feet. I float precariously as they laugh and cheer. Below me I can see how the lake is different. The water is kept clean by small air-filled plastic bubbles, and they are only loosely held together.
The tip of my pan sinks between two and I flip. My head goes between a couple of the air pockets. This I knew, this area here, the murky area. I can see so much though, my eyes feel clear. The murkiness accentuates what I see.
And I can see so much. The frogs and fish swim quickly, in a large dance. There is a city down here, a city of the fae, and I know it is their city. I see a couple walking, and they look up at me, eyes aglow.
This is where my lungs start to fill with water, as I hear their voices in my mind…and my friends pull me up. The John Cleese one pushes the water out of my chest until I cough, before sinking into a stupor again. I watch from above, arguing with the fae in my mind.
“Come join us, child, and let your dreams come true.” The voice, so soft, so beautiful.
“No, please, I need to go…” My voice is so harsh compared to this angel.
“Come play with us child, down here, where you want to live…”
At this point I know that I will lose the argument, so my attention turns to my friends. They are talking to an old sailor, someone I know, an old man who is always on this lake.
“We need to take her to the hospital!” Michael Palin, and he is dressed as an old woman, hmm…
The sailor shakes his head. “She belongs to the lake now, but don’t worry, the fae won’t let her die. She has a strong mind.”
I am confused at this, I had given up so easily, given in to the fae. The sailor speaks again.
“She saw their city, so she can never leave, as I did when I was young. I was weak though, and they didn’t want me, no siree. They want her though, I can tell. I have sailed these waters longer than I can remember, living off of frogs and fish and my own skills, but she is somethin’ unique. Oh, yes, the fae will take her. And she will be happy. I never got over the fact that they didn’t want me. Probably because I can’t leave, but, as you see, they want her.” He points. We all see my body slide into the water, and suddenly I’m me again. I feel the water fill my lungs. I thrash, and sink. Then I wake up.
