Dreams can provide insight into our deepest thoughts. Using dream interpretation to explore dream symbols and uncover a dream's meaning can lead to a better understanding of ourselves.
| I was an ogre. I don't know what I looked like but I was tall, had very long arms, was scary looking (deduced by the way people ran screaming when they saw me) and rather young. My parents were burned out and killed and I had to make my way through the countryside, skulking in barns and traveling by night and stealing food to survive.
Eventually I came across a small country hotel, the kind with the neon sign that had one letter broken, so it said " alley Hotel." Here I met the first person I'd ever seen who wasn't terrified of me: a very old and cantankerous hotel manager, who gave me something to eat and then gave me a job on the night shift, cleaning up. We got on rather well. She enjoyed getting dressed up in shirt, pants and hat, taking a camera, and going around the countryside photographing things. The neighbors considered her shocking, but forgave her due to her age and longevity in the area.
She took me with her on these excursions. She taught me photography. The cameras were old and strange: she'd hold them at chest level rather than looking through them, and they didn't have a telescoping lens, just a small glass-covered hole.
The neighborhood found out, of course. The daughter of a nearby manor house hated me with a particular virulence, and I had to be very careful around her so as not to make her mad. She would torment me, and there was nothing I could do about it; I tried to stay out of her way and appease her, but nothing worked. Until one day she and the boy she liked were sitting around the hotel kitchen while I swept up, and she went nuts and tried to kill him for some reason; I tried to separate the two, she screamed, got a cut on her arm, and ran to her daddy saying that I'd tried to kill her.
Well, that was it. I had to take off. The old woman gave me some supplies and sent me on my way before the torches and pitchforks arrived. I walked and walked for thousands of miles, for a whole year, all the way down to the arid deserts of Colorado...where I encountered the young lover of the girl who'd tormented me at the hotel. He'd joined some knightly order and was decked out as a crusader. He'd made it his goal to find me and kill me. Inevitably I killed him instead. The sword slid so surprisingly easily through his body, through the right ribcage, and it stuck in the ground when he fell back dead.
At this point I turned around and made my way back to that small hotel in the valley; and by the time I returned, people had pretty much forgotten about me. The girl had moved away. I was able to discreetly resume my third-shift cleaning duties at the hotel, and the old woman took it upon herself to teach me to read. |
