Dreams can provide insight into our deepest thoughts. Using dream interpretation to explore dream symbols and uncover a dream's meaning can lead to a better understanding of ourselves.
My husband, (young adult) son, and I had recently moved into a large house that we got for a very low price. The scenes that I remember in this dream occurred in the upstairs of the house. I know it was a long and involved dream, but I can only precisely recall a some of it . . .
There was a sense that the place was haunted by the former (deceased) owner who had been a wealthy old man. In the dream I know his first name was mentioned and I had a visual image of him . . .
There were only a few rooms of the house (that in retrospect was really a mansion) that are clear in my memory right now. One was an upstairs bedroom. It was “my” room and had a bunk bed and another single bed. Because the place was scary (I am certain there were ghosts in the place), my son asked to sleep in there with me and his dad. The bathroom nearby was large but also scary, mostly because there was a mouse running around staring at me from under a bathtub on claw feet and the floor was simply filthy.
There was one time in the dream where I was wondering if we had locked all of the doors before going upstairs to bed. I was thinking that since we were living in such a huge place, my husband and I should agree on a routine for keeping all of the outside doors locked at all times. At the time I was worrying about it, still I didn’t want to go down there and check the doors. It seemed too scary to do it alone.
In the dream it occurred to me that there were a lot more rooms that we had never been in upstairs (seems like in my dream we had only been in 3 of the rooms and there were 5 more that we hadn’t entered). My son and I started to explore a little bit.
I first went into one of the rooms by myself, and it seemed like it had been the bedroom of the previous owner. I was opening built-in cupboards that contained a lot of intricate cubby holes. and was amazed that they were cleaned out so thoroughly and in such good shape--on one cupboard door (which were dark wood, heavy doors with intricate woodwork) there was even the original price tag!! It was kind of a fancy tag, and I decided to leave in on there. I halfway expected to find some possessions of the old man in the drawers or cupboards, but didn’t see anything until I turned and found a collection of metal pins attached to a hanging. They were not fancy, just kind of kitschy (like with the Flintsones and cartoon characters on them and things like that). I had a thought that a childhood friend of mine would know about the collectability of the pins—then she appeared in the dream as we continued to explore.
My son and I opened one of the rooms and entered a suite of rooms. There was a shiny gold-colored door to one of the rooms, I thought that looked very intriguing and opened it, but didn’t go completely in—but inside looked very 1960’s mod, and I “knew” it was a Playboy/swingers room. Something freaky happened then—we heard the voice of the dead old man calling out the name of a woman in a questioning voice and I “knew” he was calling for a former concubine I can't remember what her name was, though. This was scary, but not terrifying. We closed that door quickly and went on our way.
This “suite” of rooms we were exploring was almost like a small mall or airport. There were real people back there, behind the scenes. In one spot there was a miniature operating area (no walls, just open sided) with a doctor and a nurse—we walked by, but exchanged greetings with them—it seemed I was acquainted with them (I am an RN), but I have no idea who they were. It occurred to me in the dream, that the medical clinic/operating room could come in handy and I was pleased to be aware that we owned it since it was part of the house.
Eventually my childhood friend and I entered a room deep in this "suite" that was actually a small, plain beauty shop—reminded me of the ones that were around in the 1960’s when I was growing up. There were two beauticians and they casually wondered what WE were doing there. We explained to them that I now owned the house. They were surprised and wanted to know what happened to the old man. We told them he had died. They asked how long ago, and after we told them, their response was something like, “Well, it hasn’t been 30 days yet.” I remember inferring from their response that these girls’ contract or responsibility to the place would end 30 days after the old man’s death.
Late in the dream, near the end, I was on my hands and knees scrubbing the dirty bathroom floor that had bothered me early in the dream. I felt determined to make that bathroom usable, (although I was still looking out for the mouse from the corner of my eyes, but no longer so frightened of it.)
The last part of the dream was my childhood friend being very cheerful and suggesting exploring more of the rooms we hadn’t seen yet . . .
