A Clutter Of Little Details (Need Doing Dream)
January 8, 2012

This morning I dreamed I’d driven to an outdoor shopping plaza, where I stopped to use the bank machine to get some cash. It was a clear day, without rain and not too cold, although there was some grey clouds moving across the sky. My brother was with me, but chose to stay in the car. Instead of pulling into a proper parking spot, I just pulled the car alongside a curb, close to an intersection in the middle of the plaza with a 4-way stop, but whish looked fairly clear of traffic. I parked there because the bank was nearby.

When I went to use the bank machine I discovered that my bank-card wasn’t in with me, nor in the spot in my wallet where I usually left it. I didn’t want to leave the bank machine, but as a searched for my bank card a woman I judged to be in her 20s, with olive skin and curly dark hair, which might have been dreads, came up to use the machine, so I stepped out of the way. For whatever reason, she couldn’t use the machine either, though. It seemed like she didn’t have her bank card either. I kept looking for my bank card, but couldn’t find it.

Finally, I thought that maybe I’d left it in the car. I was about to go back, when I noticed a skinny man, with scruffy beard and hair and dirty clothes, shoving a bunch of empty bottles into a nearby garbage can. Unable to abide anyone throwing out their empties, I fished them all out myself so I could return them to the bottle depot. Most of the empties were in a plastic bag, which made carrying them easier. Not all of them, though. Still, I dutifully got them all out so I could take them back to the car with me. Then the homeless man returned to the bin, but all he had left to put in was some newspaper. For whatever reason I took these, too. The man suddenly smiled at me, and in a cheerful voice thanked me for doing a good job with the recycling and handed me $4.00, as if in payment for my effort. I was surprised, and a little confused, since I was supposed to be paid after I returned the bottles to the depot. Nonetheless, I accepted the money, and went back to the car.

The weather appeared to have cleared as I got back. I wasn’t carrying the bottles with me any more, though. Instead, I was wondering if I’d left my keys in the car. As if anticipating this question, Jaemi, my brother, showed me that he had my car keys. I got back in the driver’s seat, and told Jaemi that if he wanted to look at a newspaper I’d picked up all of the dailies, except for the Vancouver Sun. There may have been a reason why I hadn’t got that one, but I don’t remember what it was. As I started the car, I knew I was interested in reviewing the contents of the Province, but I can’t remember why. Maybe I wanted to check the movie listings, so we could go see a film? Whether or not that was the case, that was where the dream ended.
