Dreams can provide insight into our deepest thoughts. Using dream interpretation to explore dream symbols and uncover a dream's meaning can lead to a better understanding of ourselves.
About a year ago I was staying with my family during an intermittent period of life, in between travel adventures and during a time when I was starting to feel very listless and useless in my life, when I had a dream that brought me great inspiration and comfort.
I do not remember a distinctive starting point in the dream, and I do not remember whether or not the dream followed any previous dreams that night. The first thing that I remember is walking along a stone path with stone walls that came up to my knees, approximately. The path clearly led to a temple of some sort, which was made from the same stone and decorated with Tibetan prayer flags, as well as some sort of orange cloth that I didn't recognize. As I walked I was aware of a female presence walking alongside me, and knew that this was a very close friend accompanying me on my journey. Upon waking, I was not able to identify this friend. As we walked, we neared a portion of the stone path that seemed to 'dip down' by way of two or three steps. On either side of this 'dip' the stone walls of the pathway had been left opened, in order to allow water from either a naturally flowing source, or an artificially diverted one, to flow perpendicular to the walkway, so that it was impossible to continue on the pathway toward the temple without stepping down into the flow of water. The waterway was about three feet across, and was exited by way of an equal amount of stair on the opposite side.
I was simultaneously aware, upon reaching this portion of the pathway, both that it was customary to take one's shoes off and step into the water, washing one's feet of any real or symbolic impurities before entering the temple, and that there were two elderly gentlemen waiting on the 'porch' of the temple for my friend and I. It is interesting to not that I was aware that these men were 'holy men', teachers of wisdom, but that they were seated on plastic and aluminum lawn chairs.
I knew that these two men, dark complected and dressed in orange-yellow-maroon robes, were our teachers. I also knew that one of the men was older, and the teacher of the other. The men were jolly faced, smiling with that type of joy that you only see radiating on the faces of great teachers like Alan Watts or the Dalai Lama, and they had been waiting for us.
The most powerful part of this entire dream was the overwhelming feeling of homecoming that I felt when I saw the two teachers and realized that I had made it to the temple. I knew that I was home, that I had returned to myself, to the truth that I hold at my deepest depth.
What that truth is, I do not know! All I know is that this dream caused me to re-think some of the plans I had made for my life and re-affirm that I was going to make the journey to my next destination, to do the work that I was going to do. I decided to interpret this dream as my subconscious making a commitment to serve a spiritual path above anything else, and so I affirmed this consciously with my thoughts and actions.
During that time period I also had a dream of my real life teacher, a Tibetan Lama. At the time I did not consider him my teacher, only the founder of the learning institute where I studied his teachings and the teachings of the Buddha. I do not think that this teacher was one of the men in my dreams. I do, however, believe that I later discovered one of the men in the dream, and that I took a course under his tutelage. I now consider him one of my teachers as well.
I guess I am lucky to have had this dream, and to have given it so much thought!
