I say why I add people it's because they have enough in common with me.  I won't add fans that have no stories or experiences.   I wish others would say why they add me.

Do you honestly expect me to add you to my circle just because you added me to yours? No, not happening. I'm not interested in being a number, someone's agony aunt, and so forth. What I do want are friends, true friends, kay?

Compose a short message of greeting. Perhaps comment on a story or two. It sorts the weirdos from the persons of interest ye know. Courtesy & all that.
