I am a painter and I sell a lot of artwork online, in coffee shops, bars stores, and restaurants, etc, but am timid to make the jump to the gallery scene, because I don't really know what the procedure is. Does anyone have any suggestions or a story about how they did it? Thanks!

It may seem bold but I found 2 ways that work for me...first I walk in cold off the street and ask for the owner and then show my work......second I call and make an appointment to see the owner and then show my works......so far they have worked very well and I am in 4 galleries now and staying busy.....one word of caution pick your galleries carefully....if the gallery is a dump your work will be treated like trash my advise .....shoot for the stars

artdog gives sound advice.  The other thing is, galleries now sometimes take 60% of retail, so it may seem prestigious to show in a gallery, but you might do better in the coffee shop.

Better yet, How do ya sell art work over the Internet or any other way. I just started painting in winter of 2011. I used to draw as a kid and found painting with oils to be enjoyable. I will only get better and it would be nice to sell my work.

I agree with the other posts about simply contacting or  going to a gallery on your own..  The other thing you can do to get some advertising, and get some name recognition, is to donate a piece of your art to a very popular charity event.  many of these charitable events have auctions, and you work  will be on display.  They also usually list the donations in the program., and so your name will be there also.
