It does take a little time to get friends here. What's cool is be selective on the story topic friends you want, if you wish. You can see their history and the stories they are commenting on and you too can comment on the same story. This way you learn about the person. I'm not sure exactly how many friends I have, 35 or 40ish, but if I could do it again, I'd just have 10 friends and slowly build from there. This would enable me to have a deeper relationship with each individual.
But you can friend as many people as you want. I suggest choosing someone who's story/comment you like. You can build friends quickly but probably won't know each one as deeply as if you built slowly. Then there are times you will run into some people that are exceptional and you'll want to add them as a friend because you think that they are a positive influence on you one way or another.
