I Am Slavic

Personal Stories, Advice, and Support 224 People

My great grandmother was born in Yugoslavia.

I am unsure of what region she was born in because my dad was adopted but her last name was Vukic. A southern Slavic surname. I wish I knew more about my family.

Not As Authentic As I Wish To Be.

I am only half-Slavic. Two different kinds, though. (Some Russian from my mom, and some  Yugoslavian from my dad, making 25% of each.) I wish a was a little more, because in high school I envied people who got to celebrate "Heritage Day". A lot of Americans are...

    An Odd Last Name

My last name is German but my family is Polish but they immigrated to the U.S. from Lvov, Ukraine, 120 years ago.  There aren't very many "famous" people with my last name, so when they Google the name, they inevitably hit upon me.  I've heard from "us...

    Malchik Equals Nadsat

Nadsat is a mode of speech used by the nadsat, members of the teen subculture in the novel A Clockwork Orange. The antihero and narrator of the book, Alex, uses it in first-person style to relate the story to the reader. He also uses it to communicate with other characters in...

    I Am Slavic

For better or worse. And usually it's for the worse. We might just be the worst people ever. Now, I bet you couldn't pronounce my last name  (I'm gonna break my anonymity this once). Djordjevic. Or to spell it originally - Đorđević. P.S. Sending me MP3's of your...

My Grandfather, He Escaped The Nazi's And The Gas Chambers That Happened Later On In WWII

I'm a super mutt, but 1/4 slavic on my mothers side..it was my grandfather.  I got the high cheekbones and slanted eyes and olive skin he had.  Though I never met him, he was dead before I was born, just heard about him. He had a great slavic family name...guess he had to...

    Are We All Crazy?

I am only about 1 third Slavic, but it shows..Slavic heritage is probably impossible to get rid of. You'd think 33% genetic material doesn't count, but it does...it shows on my features, my temper, my tendency to get angry easily, probably my passion and stupidity when it comes...
