A Few Times Have Lived Without It

When I worked in Kosovo, I had to walk around half a mile from the house in which I was living to use a solar powered heated shower- that was what it was called, whilst in essence it was the strong heat of the summer sun, heating the water directly that was coming out of a...

I Have Never Been More Thankful For Electricity Than Friday Night (9/19/08)

I live in southern Indiana and had my power knocked out by the wind storms that blew through on Sept. 14th, 2008. We had winds holding steady at 60+ mph for a few hours. We lost power around 1230pm and didn't get it back until Sept. 19th. Living without electricity sucks! I can...

    Many Times

when I was a kid, we lost our electricity, not due to a storm, or damage, but could not pay the bill.  We drew our water from a hand pump, heating and cooking was splitting wood and coal, light was kerosene lanterns.  Don't take this as a poor me, it was simply how it was and...

    Lights Out

Having just retired from a major utility here in Florida i can sure tell you about a lot of unhappy customers when the power is out. We no more would arrive and get out of our trucks when they would descend on us like flies at a picnic. What,s wrong, how long is it going to be, i...

    Lights Out

I lived in Gambia, West Africa for a short while with absolutely no electricity or running water. Reading was done by candlelight. I had to go to the pump for water and carry the bucket on my head.  God bless the USA!

    Thankful, But...

I am defintely thankful for electricity because I am a night owl and appreciate the light I can use at night.  I also like  being able to use a hair dryer and do laundry (although laundry can be hand washed and my hair air dryed).  However, I am sure I could go...

    Feeling Bad

I was in the Dominican Replic a few years ago and I was really shocked to learn that people had to deal with up to 15 hours of power cuts every day!  Imagine that.  You take it for granted that you will have power and heat and light... There was an amazing community...

    Lights On

I am thankful I have electricity.  There are people out there right now that couldn't pay the light bill, and their lights got turned off. I am very grateful that that is not the case with me. I don't take anything for granted, so yes, I am VERY thankful I have...

    Then

It remains a miracle, an achievement that cannot be overestimated and the result of a collective effort that there is running water and electricity. Those commodities came with the industrial revolution but they contained a view of how society should be as well. They are a...

I Just Had This Conversation This Morning

I told my husband that if he really, really, really wants to get a place with no electricity then he has to do the laundry.  He countered by saying that he is not sure he could go without a generator.  I then brought up the obvious specter of his illusive mistress (the...

    The Time Machine

Have you ever wanted to jump into a time machine and go back in time, thinking that they were the “Good Old Days?” At this time in the world you can flip a switch to be in the 21st Century, in the year 2011, and able to do pretty much anything or everything we wish to do...

Electricity Is Important, I Hope I Never Take It For Granted

Too many people take for granted how important electricity is. You get use to the sound of it in the walls that when it's gone and silence remains, everything feels out of place. Need it for light, for warmth, for cooking, for bathing...for so many things. It's important.

Back in the '70's there were a series of

strikes by power workers. Added to that a shortage in oil. So for a brief period Britain only had power for a certain amount of time each day. And the oil shortage meant you could only get gas (petrol) on certain days! And even then it was rationed. This was all to do with a big...
