I Learned To Drive On A 'stickshift'

Way back when I was 15 yrs old, I could hardly wait to drive. Way back then, most all cars were manual transmissions. I was 'lucky' enough to have a mom that thought everyone should learn to drive using a manual transmision. Just in case you needed to know how.. I remember...

I guess what you're saying is that you can drive a car where you need to push on a clutch pedal and select a gear. [...] what the hell —— even an automatic transmission's selector comes in the form of a stick! What's this stick-shift crap?! Manual or auto, they all have...

I learned to drive in an old Volkswagen beetle.

I much prefer to drive a stick shift. Because of the way I drive, I can get much better mileage with a stick. I have a 95 Ranger with the 4 cylinder engine and 5 speed transmission, and get over 35 miles per gallon highway, and about 29 in the city.

A stick shift is more common here in the UK

than an automatic, so most people learn this first.

    DJW1's Part 2

Part 2-  I was learning to drive mom's 'stick shift' car.  Mom's boy friend offered to take me out driving. 'Sure' she said and off we went. He wanted me to sit next to him (bench seat) and shift into the proper gear when he put in the clutch.  All went well. I was doing good...

I grew up on a farm so I learned to drive a

stick when I was about 13 years old in the middle of a pasture in an old Chevy pickup... Redneck, I know!

Pop had a couple of 1960's pickups with 3 speed

on the column. So often the gears would hang up between 1st and 2nd. You would have to get out, open the hood and reach in to unjam the rods. Finally learned to gun the accelerator while shifting and it would not hang up.

I've always preferred driving this way,

I don't feel in control of an automatic!

    This was more difficult

for me to learn, but since we have an old farm truck, I am able to do it. I'm also able to drive a tractor trailer, not legally, but I can do it enough to move it from one place to another.
