    Poor Fireflies, I Mourn You

When I was little, my sister, friends and I would get so excited for nightfall in the summertime. We had a huge yard and there was a multitude of fireflies! The air seemingly blinked all over the place! And I used to love to catch them and hold them in my hand, just so I could...

    The Glow In the Dark

We used to go to this camp that belonged to part of the family. It was an old camp, in history, and a well used camp, in available resources. And because it was the Finnish In-law part of the fam, it had a sauna.  I`ve known those to sit in the sauna for an hour, then run...

Fireflies are one of my most fun memories as a child.  We use to see how many we could get in to a jar.  I always let mine go before I went to bed, but my brother always tried to suffocate them and I would slip in to his bedroom and let them go.

    It Caught Me!

I like to go outside in the evening, to stand and breathe and relax. To look at the world around me and reconnect with the world of trees and vines and small wild things. In the summer, this is prime firefly time.I don't chase fireflies anymore.  That doesn't change the fact I...

    As a Kid...

As a kid nothing was better than catching the first fireflies of the season. We called them lightning bugs though.

During the summer, my sisters, cousins, and I would wander around outside just before it got really dark to catch fireflies. Sometimes I would just stand there and watch them fly around me, like little rogue stars floating everywhere. I liked catching them and watching them...

    I Caught Glow Bugs

I hate calling them flies, because while flies serve a purpose here on earth, they are vile and disgusting creatures. Glow bugs on the other hand, fascinate and delight wherever they go and are truly wonderful to have around!

We'd get a mason jar, put in a few blades of wet grass, catch a few fireflies, and carry them back to show mom and day before letting them go again. Then as a chemistry student, I was delighted to find that the reagents a firefly uses are commercially available.  Mix...

    Lightning Bugs.

When I was little and would visit my

Grandparents in the summer, I would catch fireflies. I'd try to see how many I could catch at one time. I loved to sit on the porch swing at night and watch them.

is what we call them but used to love catching them when I was a kid, we were kindof mean to them though because we would catch some and tear off the light part and make rings with it until they died out then wash our hands and start over again...I'm sorry lightning bugs RIP lol

One Of My Favorite Childhood Memories

A summer ritual as a child.  There were four families that got together every Fourth of July.  After dinner, just about dusk, the firefiles would come out and all of the kids would catch fireflies until it was time for the real fireworks.  Back when life was simple...

    Childhood Memories...

Ahhh!!!  I remember catching them every year when I was a kid in Illinois.  To be young again.  I will have to be sure my daughter has the chance to do it someday.

    What Happened?

When I was a little kid I saw them all the time, and now I never see them.  Even when I visit my childhood home, where they used to be, I don't see them.  What happened?
