I Don't Know How to Take Compliments

Personal Stories, Advice, and Support 5,204 People

well first I rarely get them.

So when I do, it's pretty weird and I feel awkward somehow. So from that, I even don't know how to compliment others which suck. In my head I'd be like 'oooh she dresses up nice today'. I won't say it but instead I just stare at them with a blank dumb face.

    Whatever compliments I receive,

I will never feel like it cuz I know I am not, it's not . The words are just there to keep the conversations going and for the sake of having something to say without even meaning it.

When a guy friend compliments me I am usually

pretty sassy as a joke, like I'll say something like "I know" and the flip my hair and do an awful model walk for a few feet. But once my crush compliments me, I usually say "thanks" and compliment them back or turn away awkwardly and blush, or I'll say "I appreciate the lie."

    It is sometimes very irritating.

i don't know but i can't take compliments well in my stride. i always feel people don't mean them and i ask them to stop. some think that i'm snobby while people who know me in and out has accepted it as one of my erratic behaviors. it's irritating at times. i guess i do...

    When someone compliments me,

I either blush or laugh it off. The other day, I was complimented on something physically that made me laugh. Now, I've been complimented on my legs... my hands...my smile but while I was getting some blood work done, the nurse told me I had lovely veins. Veins?! Really...

I just don't know how to take compliments.

Either my anxiety gets the best of me and I think the person is up to something (or wants something), or I think they are lying. I feel that I have mastered the awkward thank you and smile. I'm trying to learn how not to read to much into it, and how to graciously accept it.

    Why is it as females,

we feel the proper response to a compliment is to decline? Like our natural instinct is to tell somebody no, we do not look nice today.

I feel like if I say "yes thanks" it seems like

I'm accepting the compliment and thinking I'm such an amazing, perfect, beautiful person. So sometimes I'll be like, "no I'm really not..." And then that backfires cause people go "fine! I was just trying to be nice!" And other people think I want even more compliments! Like no...

It's never as easy as just saying "thank you".

I already don't think much of myself and I don't want anyone else to think so either. Saying "thank you" typically indicates that the compliment is heard and appreciated, but in my mind, I feel like I'm agreeing with the complimentor (yes, I make up words), and acknowledging...
