Last night a guy said to me “You are very,

    Why is it as females,

we feel the proper response to a compliment is to decline? Like our natural instinct is to tell somebody no, we do not look nice today.

    When I get complemented on,

I usually try to joke it off and say "No one likes a kiss up" or "You talkin to me?" Then they say they mean it and all I can do is sheepishly say "thank you" without making eye contact. I consider that a step up. I used to freeze in disbelief at someone buttering me up. Then...

It's never as easy as just saying "thank you".

I already don't think much of myself and I don't want anyone else to think so either. Saying "thank you" typically indicates that the compliment is heard and appreciated, but in my mind, I feel like I'm agreeing with the complimentor (yes, I make up words), and acknowledging...

I know that probably sounds absurd.

I'm not sure why, and I have taken notice to it, but do not know how to change the way I address them! Maybe it's social anxiety/awkwardness, maybe I'm just negative and am not aware of that. Can anyone relate to this? And if so, what have you done to change this?
