Fresh Poster | on 10:57PM at Jun 12th, 2007 I did recently and am happy with the results. I guess I've gotta drop out of the group, now... Bye guys; it's been fun!
A few parting notes: The doctor was right; it took 7 days to heal and being in your 20's doesn't mean anything. A friend recommended making sure the surgeon uses a harmonic scalpel, but I didn't because I felt I could trust the doctor's opinion. My surgeon used a combination of a heated scalpel and a normal one.
Lasers are no good, though. Watch out.
My tonsils were "abnormally large and riddled with crypts," so I went for it. Oh, and if you do get a tonsillectomy, stock up on cold foods that melt in your mouth. Chewing is doable, but it's the swallowing that hurts. Also, sweet or salty foods will irritate the wound at the back of your throat.
When the seven days are over, I felt good! My throat had some scabs. The full healing process takes about a month, then you're better than ever! Last edited on 09:57PM at Jun 15th, 2007; edited a total of 1 time |

| Fresh Poster | on 01:24AM at Aug 8th, 2008 Well I am 18 years old and just had a tonsillectomy and am now on day 8 after my surgery. I have heard mixed stories about getting this surgery. Some people have the surgery just hang out at home for a few days and are fine, others like me are completely miserable and want the pain to end. The day after surgery I'm going to have to say has been the easiest day so far. Every day it seems like there is a new problem and its never going to end. My throat has actually been the least of my wories up until today. My tongue gets swollen every time I try to eat, Im always so hungry and get nauseous because I cant eat. I have the worst earaches that I have EVER had in my entire life and the only thing that has been helping is icepacks right underneath my ears. I am dehydrated and it feels like no matter how much I drink or think I am drinking its just not enough. Today has been the first day that I have even been able to see to the back of my throat and its all white and pretty disgusting. I cannot wait for this to be over. Even ice cream, applesauce, jello, pudding, smoothies, milkshakes,....everything hurts. My advice to anyone is to make sure you have plenty of time off of work and to stay hydrated or try as much as you can to get fluids in you because it really doesnt help the whole situation to be dehydrated. Good Luck if you are going to get one. Hopefully your procedure will go a little better than mine. |
| Fresh Poster | on 04:27AM at Jan 17th, 2009 To anyone who is considering getting a tonsillectomy.... I work as a Surgical Tech in Surgery and I would suggest to anyone considering a tonsillectomy to go with a Surgeon that uses the good old suturing method on the tonsils. If they use a cautery type device that will just cause a scab to form over the tonsils and the scab scraps off too soon, then you're in for some trouble. People can bleed and die over a stupid scab falling off on your tonsil area. If the surgeon uses absorbable suture and ties it all closed then there is far less risk of post-op bleeding. Just some food for thought. |
| Fresh Poster | on 04:53AM at Feb 11th, 2009 I had a tonsillectomy two weeks ago today and just wanted to say a few positive things as storys tend to be all doom and gloom. Yes it hurts but as long as you do what the docs tell you, you will heal quick and be back to normal by day 10. The first week i breezed through, i woke up from the op in no pain and just had a mild sore throat until about day 6 then it started to hurt more, esp the throbbing type pain in my ears and it hurt to swallow and talk. Take meds every four hours on the dot even if your in no pain, its harder to shift the pain once it arrives.
In this country anyway (England) your encouraged to eat lots of rough stuff from day 1, none of this jello or ice cream as this does nothing to help you heal - the rough stuff scraps the back of your throat and keeps it clear from infectin and helps it to heal faster - it hurts yes but you must do it. Drink lots of water too as a dehydrated throat hurts like hell. I was eating toast about 3 hours after the op and have continued to eat norrmally even tho some days it brought tears to my eyes. Manuka Honey i HIGHLY reccommend, it has healy properites and taken with warm water is very very soothing and nums the pain. I did all this and by day 10 i was over it - eating and talking normally no pain what so ever. My overal take on tonsillectomy is it wasnt all that bad....just make sure eat and drink normal things thats the key ! :) |
| Fresh Poster | on 01:00AM at Mar 8th, 2009 I just had a tonsillectomy about 3 weeks ago now. Honestly it was the worst thing ever! I am 18 and I had to get them out because they kept abscessing.
So I had my surgery on a Tuesday morning and everything went well I woke up and left recovery a few hours later. The first night was fine, it was after that where things started to go down hill. I had read all over the place that the first few days were not too bad....yeah...mine were horrible I could not swallow or talk and i kept having these horrible coughing fits.
So a few more days went by and then I woke up saturday morning and and began to cough.... seconds later my mouth was full of blood and blood clots. I knew they said I could bleed a very small amount, but by this time i had already spit up at least a cups worth.... disgusting I know! I was rushed to the hospital where i waited for my ENT to get there all the while they were trying to pull these clots out of my mouth with tongs of some sort, worst pain ever. Soon enough I was put back under and had them sealed up once again.
It basically put me back to the beginning of recovery, and it took me another week or so before I began to feel normal again. I hear it is only about a 3% chance you will Hemorrhage so no one really needs to be concerned of that! However it was something that needed to be done and now that it is Im happy with it! |
| Fresh Poster | on 06:58PM at Aug 13th, 2009 hey guys i just got my tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy today at 1230pm. i think the surgeon i had used the ould fashion methond od cold scalpel because i see some stitching in the abck of my throat i also see a flap a skin hanging in back of my uvula. is this normal. i am heavily medicated at the moment. thank God that i did not get cauteerized because the stories you guys posted are horrendousany advice? i would really appreciate it. also i am drinking ice cold ensure and gatorade .by the way i have minimal swelling i think he did a great job if anyone is going to get this procedure i suggest you go to a ENT from cornell university hospital in NYC. |
| Fresh Poster | on 08:23AM at Sep 20th, 2009 I had my tonsillectomy on Friday. I'm on day 2 post op and am miserable. Friday I woke up after surgery with some discomfort but nothing too bad. Yesterday I woke up and hung halloween decorations as the pain wasn't too bad but as yesterday drug on I started to feel awful. Alot of swelling and pain. This morning is by far the worst and I'm only on day 2. I would love to take my liquid Roxicet but have a fear of puking. I'm sure my neck and face are also swollen today. Anyone else have theirs out lately??? I really need a chat buddy. |
| Fresh Poster | on 02:08PM at Sep 23rd, 2009 i just got my tonsils out on the 14th.
it was cauterized and i got some Norco (super vicadin)
i'm loving it. lol
Anyway i went to a great ENT. and i'm happy that i got them cut out. The only complication that i had was a scab fell off a little early and an unhealed artery bled in my mouth 2 times in one day for about 5-10 each time. I went to the Dr. and he said its not bad enough to go recauterize it. Just let it clot when it bleeds and it should be fine. so i didn and its fine now. That was 2 days ago.
I've got pain like a soar throat now and its doing pretty good.
I ate italian Ice for the first couple of days cherry flavor form Schwans. Its made with water instead of milk so it doesnt make your throat as sticky as all the dairy stuff.
also i found at about days 3 i think i started eatin cup of noodles, the noodles are wet and slide right down with just a little swallow help. if you get smoothies get ones that are acidic and get protein boosts. it makes the smoothie a little chalky tasting but your body will heal if you are well hydrated and especially with more protein; considering you cant eat a steak or a tilapia, protein in a smoothie is your best bet.
i work in an office with flexible hours (i'm on salary without a time clock) so around the middle of the day i go take a nap. i am very tired because i probably shouldnt be working already, but my throat is definitely almost all healed up. that idiot that said eat hard stuff...thats retarded, it'll pull your scabs off and you'll bleed before youre healed which could lead to getting recauterized and your healing process starting all over again.
getting somebody to take care of you is great, talking less often is better.
I've torn ligaments, broken bones, seperated shoulders, and this is definitely the most painful surgery i've ever had and the most pain i've been in for a long time. (some were worse for shorter amounts of time, but this is pretty rough all together. Day 2 was the worst for me. |
| Fresh Poster | on 02:12PM at Sep 23rd, 2009 the mortality rate is 1 in 25,000. and not all of them are even from bleeding, others are even from not being able to breathe correctly. so your advice is fine, but dont try to scare people with the grossly minute possibility of death from bleeding.
cauterization is a more advanced surgery.
all surgeries with options have pros and cons, there are advantages to different surgeries, ie. acl surgery has 3 methods of repair all depend on the person and the dr. |
| Fresh Poster | on 03:20PM at Sep 23rd, 2009 Wow you sound very good for 9 days into it. I'm 5 days into it and am still having alot of pain. My boyfriend is picking me up more liquid Roxicet today which is very helpful but makes my teeth very sensitive. My ENT said my tonsils were extremely embedded more than he expected to find. I can't tell if I have scabs yet. I'm still very swollen and it just looks all white back there. How long till the scabs start to come off? I started gargling with salt water today, supposed to help with the smell. |
| Fresh Poster | on 07:53PM at Nov 3rd, 2009 Mu literature says gargling can cause bleeding. Chew gum | |
