I Hate Materialism

Personal Stories, Advice, and Support 245 People

Material things do not make us happy. I think deep down we all know this but we keep going along trying for 'wealth and success'. Finally, we come to a point when we realise happiness cannot be bought. We either get cynical or depressed or we do something and change our lives.

    No Money Needed...

Suppose we grew our own vegetables, had farms etc...there were no SHOPS...to sell us OVER PRICED stuff.  And we would just exchange things with each other..That would make us learn how to share.  People do come together during a crisis, if you notice...If there is a...

    Clothing Labels

...are the worst. People shell out 50$ for a shirt that says Hollister or has a little american eagle emblem on it. Really? Are they really warped enough to want to pay to be a corporate billboard? Is that how they identify themselves? I started stenciling  my own shirts...

    What's The Cost?

Wanting "stuff" isn't a crime.  They can be nice to have around, or just plain fun.  What I don't approve of is putting other people down and judging them because they don't have, want or even need said "stuff". I know so many people that look down on you because you don't have...

    Keeping Up With the Joneses...

I can't stand it when a person only caves into immediate gratification and can bearly pay for what they need to live on. What good would it be if one is driving a sooped *no idea the spelling of this word* up car with the $1000 rims, radio and paint job... and can't afford food...

    NUH Uh

I don’t care about having the fanciest house or the most expensive clothes.  To me life is not a game about collecting the most toys before I die.  It is about helping others. So you wont see fungirl with a lot of frills other than her business suits (and that is...

    Greed Sickens Me

Sometimes I wish, I didn’t own a thing. A long time ago, I used to believe that ownership of nice material things was an important part of finding happiness in life. At least, that is the lesson that I had learned from my elders. My parents, and grandparents, both used...

Well I'm Not Tyler Durdan Haha!

I'm not VERY materialistic I should say. If I buy something its because I feel I need it. I'll try give an example. Recently I wanted an MP3 player for Christmas. I wanted one because I love music and feel it will make working out more pleasurable. I bought a...

Happiness to me is soooo not a lot of Cash.

Certainly money is important, we need it to survive! But having enough money to live properly is enough! Isn't it? Then the more important things come… Important things such as living your life with someone you love and trust and have mutual understanding with, which of...

"I Hate Materialism," Types The Girl With A Brand New Laptop

I'm guilty of some hypocrisy, but its difficult to become completely un-materialistic when society demands the opposite. I am working on this, however. I've gotten rid of my books, my cds, my knick-knacks, most of my clothes. I'm replacing them with  mental pursuits...

    I Guess I Am a Minimalist

I only buy what I need and only uses what I need.  More stuff don't make you happy it just means you have more stuff.  I found a 60 dollar dresser from ikea on craiglist that was priced out new at 150 and I didn't have to put it together.  Stuff at walmart or...

This All Needs To Be Said.

the products you buy as a consumer are basically your way of buying your way into "Access" in certain social circles at this point. You are not being sold certain looks merely for the utility of those clothing but because they provide a way to share experiences with other people...

    Life And Materialism

My view on life is of that saying that “one day your life will flash before your eyes”. Watching Flight Club the other night made me reflects on life and society in general. Today society worries more about their possession and what celebrities are up to, than whether...
