I Have An Accent

I moved from the Netherland to New Zealand

when I was 40. Way too late to get rid of a fat Dutch accent. I even still have difficulties to understand the New Zealand English. For some reason Australian English is easier for me.

I live in Alabama, and I have a southern accent.

It's not quite as thick as it once was. My wife, who I've been with for almost eight years, is from the Great Lakes area. I believe her accent is rubbing off on me.

    Everyone has an accent!

However mine is an odd blend of PA Dutch English and South Jersey, so people tend to notice it and only one person has ever guessed it right. Most people think I'm English, Australian, or Scottish, and will sometimes fight me when I say I'm not. Or they think I have an...

people can get really judgemental because sometimes when I don't know a word in English I automatically say it in either French or Arabic... Horrible experience and they be like "what? What did you just say?" Or "excuse me?" Like please understand me quick!

English is not my first language

and I learned it as an adult; so, I have an accent. My accent gets heavier after a couple drinks, if I am tired or if I speak my native language a lot. English speaking people have always been super nice to me about my accent and I have no issues talking to people.

I speak English with a Norwegian accent.

Some people like it, some people are impatient for me to get my words together. Some guys find it attractive, a group of girls at school taunted me relentlessly for it. But I am what I was made to be.

It's essentially a New York accent slightly

neutralized due to the fact that I don't live in the city. My parents were from the Bronx (mom) and Queens (dad). I suppose it melded together to make a more general New York accent. You can mainly hear when I make the short o (as in coffee) or short a (as in walk and talk).

A lot of my close friends often note traces of

an English accent. I was born in London, but I didn't live there long enough for the accent to completely stick. Long enough for people to be able to tell there was an accent to begin with, however. 😒
