Such a Stupid Thing to Do

When I was 18, I had been out partying with my friends. I got into a fight with my boyfriend and I was so upset at him that I just left the house where the party was at. I didn't even have my shoes on, I just walked out without them. It was about 2 in the morning, but I...

As So Many In Days Of Old I Have Hitch-hiked.

When younger if i had the time,more-so than money I would hitch-hike. This was when I first joined the service and we were really respected and treated nicely. I enjoyed meeting so many of our great country men and women and their children. Most of the "hi-ways" were 2 lane...

    I Hated Walking

I use to hitch hike everywhere I went when I was 16 to 19 years old then when I got a car I returned the favor by picking up hitchhikers. I did it for years and never ran into a single problem cause when I was younger and hitch hiking I usually got picked up by women cause they...

    Well, Sort of

Not my brightest moment, for sure, but I didn't have a lot of choices. About 10 years ago I moved from South Carolina to Tennessee. I had to make a trip back to SC to retrieve some of my stuff and borrowed my uncle's van. The damn thing broke down at 2 in the morning about 10...

    *(Re-Take)* I was homeless

for a little over half a year before. It was one hell of an experience but this is the story of how it began. It was a deeply personal journey. I wasn't like most homeless people though because i was putting myself there. It was my decision to live on the street and hitchhike...

    When I Was Young.

I did it a lot in high school and some in college.  I sometimes wonder if I started walking down a road and stuck my thumb out if anyone would still pick me up.

It Was Part Of Growing Up

Growing up we had very little in the way of public transit. It was at least a mile's walk to the closest bus stop if the bus came at all. The routes were pretty rudimentary and service didn't run at night. Legal driving age was 18, so it wasn't until I came out of the army that I...

    Fell asleep in transit

and woke up about 300km past my destination. 4am at a little country gas station, managed to snare a ride with a trio in a station wagon headed north. Can't remember much of the trip but I know they had maroon carpet on the roof.

The first time I hitch hiked I was fourteen

and I'd been to see my grandmother, who lives twenty kilometres away from Stavanger. My father was supposed to come and get me, my mother had said she had left him a note to come to get me, but he hadn't gone home directly from school so he didn't know I was waiting for him. It...

    Across The Usa

1970 My brother and I left from California on our way to Boston to visit family. I was 15 yrs old and my brother was 16. It took us five days to get to Boston. Along the way we met all kinds of different people. Going through Albuquerque we stopped to buy some firecrackers for...

    Worth Doing!

I had always wanted to and am SO glad I finally experienced it! In July of this year, I went with my gentleman lover and by some miracle of the universe, we were able to make it from Nashville, Tennessee to Portland, Oregon in four days of hitching, both our first time. Some day...

My Main Form Of Transportation For 3 Years.

Yes when I was in high school my allowance & extra jobs $ was so low, I didn't have the funds to ride the bus to wherever I wanted to go. So I hitchhiked. I hitchhiked to school, from school, to the library, to the mall, with friends, alone, to parties, from parties, to...

My 2 Week Trip Through Europe

I departed from Newcastle station to Dover after deciding 2 days prior that I was going to undertake my much thought about European gallivant. I reached Dover late in the evening to discover that the ferry doesn't run overnight, so I enjoyed sleeping on the floor in the waiting...

    Hitch Hiking

Started doing it back in my teens due to a lack of public transportation. My mother didnt own a car, too. So it was walking, going by bicycle or for longer distances hitch hiking.

I'm Not Sure If This Counts ....

I've accepted rides from strangers who've seen me walking and stopped to ask if I needed a lift. Twice in the middle of the night in the city I went to school in, the same person saw me and was kind enough to stop & volunteer. Just because it was cold, winter, dark, buses had...
