2003 - the Summer of the Fires

In the summer of 2003 a huge area  of British Columbia was engulfed in wildfires.  It was a terrible, traumatic experience for thousands of people, residents and rescuers alike.  I have never written about this before, not even in my journal, because just after it had...

    4/27/11 Tuscaloosa, Alabama

It was a hot day for April, and a busy one. The torrent of work for the end of the semester was hitting, and, frankly, I wasn't sure if I was going to get it all done. I had been called in to open at work, delivering pizza. We were slammed all day, reports of the tornadoes...

Far Away, Long Ago Glowing Dim As An Ember

My family has lived through a natural disaster alright. Two of them as a matter of fact: Hurricane and Earthquakes. The Hurricane was Hurricane Andrew of 1992 when it sweeped through Florida. My twin and I were just kids, we didn't get the gravity of what was going on. Not until...

    Earthquake

I survived a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday. 113 confirmed dead but still counted, and around 250 people still missing.  The amazing thing is i should have been in town at the but my friend was running late to pick me up. I ended up being the front door way of my home...

    Barely

I don't mean I barely survived; I mean I barely qualify to be in this group. Growing up on the Gulf Coast, I've been through many hurricanes, but none of them that seriously endangered me, or my property.  I've been airlifted out of my flooded home by helicopter, but it was...

    Many Times

I ahve served with the American Red Cross Disaster Services for many years so have been in on recovery from natural disasters. But in 1995, I was living in North Georgia and was directly effected by a Blizzard. I went to one of the disaster shelters, only to discover that the...

    Gotta Love Huricane Parties

Katrina was close, we didn't get hit too hard though. Rita hit us dead on, the eye went over us. Ike hit hard too. Before 2005 I had lived in south east Texas my whole life and never saw a hurricane... then I got 3 in a row.

    Tornado

I lived in MO close to St. Louis for a few years and that time has given me a fear of tornadoes. The first time the sirens went of we were playing video games at our house with a friend and we all thought they were police sirens. The second time we knew what they were. We stayed...

    Well, More Than Once

I have experienced two hurricanes Hugo and Georges.  Hugo was the first hurricane to strike PR in 28 years so a generation was unprepared for it; I was 19 at the time.  We put a wood panel on the front windows but the wind took it off and the windows were expose to any...
