Personal Stories, Advice, and Support 42 People

I too have seen many, many Van Gogh paintings up close and personal, inches from my nose.  They are textured, frequently he applied paint with a knife.  I saw them at the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, perhaps my favorite museum anywhere.  There are a few here in...

    In the National Gallery....

...but with a lot paintings I was disapointed. It's not the subject and story that do it for me, it's the process and technique, the science behind the masterpiece.   Saying that... I do use him for examples when discussing the colour theory, he did use his...

    Two, Actually!

Yeah, there are two in the permanent collection of the St. Louis Art Museum (which is free to visit, by the way!).  I've been there a bunch of times, and seen the Van Goghs each time.

Has anyone seen Cafe Terrace at Night?

I believe it's in a museum in the Netherlands. I've seen quite a few here at the Met including Starry Night, Sunflowers, and his self portrait with the straw hat.

    Yes, Several

There was a huge tour of his best work, I think it was right before or right after the turn of this century. I went to see it on one of my birthdays.  An incredible artist. The work lives up to the hype. Please go and see as much of it as possible. :)

    A Self-portrait and a Portrait of a Sea Captain...

along with a flowery landscape.  I agree, you HAVE to see them in person.  My local museum has 3, and each time I go I stop to tell Vincent hello. The thickness and simplicity of the strokes, the power, integrity and emotion suggested by the strength of the colors...
