I am a fantasy fiction junkie.  I have read - more than once! - everything by:

Robin Hobb

George R.R. Martin

Robert Jordan

J.R.R. Tolkein

J.V. Jones

Carol Berg

Sara Douglass

Tamora Pierce

Libba Bray

John Marco

Any recommendations for further authors?  Generally I find an author I like and 'consume' everything they have written.  I'm a fairly fast reader...finishing a 500 page paperback in 2 days sometimes.  I like long novels because they last longer and the characters (GENERALLY) are more involved.  I love to read new things and look forward to seeing what others like to read!

Well I might recommend.

Lois McMaster Bujold,

Piers Anthony, not really a fan of his Xanth novels, but the adept and incarnation of immortality series,

Mercedes Lackey is another author I enjoyed reading,

Raymond E, Feist,

hmm, other then that though I think you've read just about everything I have.

anyway theres my two cents

I would add

Jack Chalker   & David Eddings

I still need to check my bookshelf ( Am I the only one who reads so much that I can't remember everything I've read?)

Lawrence Watt Evans

What about Michael Ende??? Momo and the Neverending Story are some of the best fantasy books out there. You MUST read them.

Wow, we have lots in common.

Bujold, Feist, Lackey AND non Xanth Anthony.  I did like the 1st two Xanth novels, but after that nope.

I also like David Weber-his War God series is great for people who mix religious theory & fiction.  David Gemmel & SM Stirling are solid fantasy authors as well.

I'm not a *huge* fan of fantasy but I notice you've not mentioned Stephen Donaldson.  The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant may start with a twist that is absent from the others.  Let me know what you think if you read it.  Which fantasy author would you recommend most to someone?

My mood: very sleepy

Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman started off the Dragonlance books. They also did the deathgate cycle, which was excellent

Jim Butcher.  His Dresden Files series is good.

Other you might want to read:

Tad Williams - Memory Sorrow and Thorn series

Anne McCaffrey - Whole Pern universe

By way of reference I also liked: Jordan's "Randland" series (Matt Cauthon is awesome); Feist's "Pugland" (the kelewan books especially); Martin (how could he kill of the wolves like that?); Anthony (loved when war entered the dojo wearing a red belt and threw everyone around);

I wanted to add "Tiger Eye" by Marjorie M Liu. I have added some of her other books to my wish list.

I would recommend some of the earlier works by Terry Brooks, even though they're apparently quite derivative of Tolkien. Pulp fantasy to fill time between more literary choices, perhaps.

In a completely different vein, The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle is completely beautiful and charming and way less girly than the title implies.

Hi Aurora,

Well I am more or less looking for the same thing... read Tolkien several times when I was younger, and last couple of years really started to read fantasy novels again.

I can recommend you Terry Goodkind and Terry Brooks and also a trilogy by Tad Williams - Dragon Bone Chair, Stone of Farewell and To Green Angel. Should keep you occupied for a while...

I see there are some recommondations already, gonna see if there is anything that I might like!

If you have already gotten the 12th book in the WoT series I suggest you go get more Brandon Sanderson books. He's an amazing writer. Also Neil Gaimon is really good

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. one of the best books I have read in a long time.

The Summoner and The Blood King -both by Gail Z. Martin are pretty good.

Kushiel's Dart, Kushiel's Choosen, and Kushiel's Avatar by Jacquelin Carey. Really good trilogy. Kinda lost interest when she kept going with the story after those three books.
