    The Difference Is Staggering

I've watched documentaries and history programs on how people used to eat bread as their main food source, day in day out. And I thought, "How could they possibly 'like' this flimsy tasteless thing?" I was referring to store bought loaves, the plain unsatisfying white slices, but...

I use to wake up every weekend to my

grandmothers homemade bread in the oven. I still feel warm and comfort when I smell fresh baking bread. It takes me back to a simpler time

Never Eat What You're Not Sure Of.

Many years ago, i travelled to a town many kilometres away from my city on the invitation of a pastor friend to be guest speaker in a program he was holding. After closing from church the first night, we went home to have something to eat before going to bed. We chose to have hot...

    In My Dreams

My dreams are made of fresh baked bread.  Just like dreams smell is a funny sensation, you can recall almost everything else, a touch, a familiar sight, but some smells are just so distinct, that you don’t even have a word to describe them; but bread is an...

    Just Bread, Not Love

I had a lover who loved bread, but not as you or I might love it. For him, it was expected at every meal, no matter what else was on his plate. No bread, no meal. I cared deeply for him, and to demonstrate my passion for him, I woke up at 4am every day to start baking bread...

    Fresh & Still Warm

As a kid I used to love getting a fresh loaf from the bakers, still warm. The first cut and plenty of butter. These days I often bake my own but I can never resist having a peice as soon as I get it out of the breadmaker. Yummy. :)

I adore fresh baked bread...and the heel piece is my favorite.Warm enough to melt the butter I slather on it, I follow up with a generous dose of strawberry jam. I just love that crusty-tender flavor combination.I'm drooling.

    Fresh Loaf Every Day

When I was a young mom I used to get up at 5:00 am every morning and start a fresh loaf of bread for my family. I'd get the coffee going for my husband and school lunches put together and the bread........sometimes it would be a kneaded yeast dough that took about 3 hours to mix...

    Bread Machine

My dad has a bread machine, although he hasn't used it in a while. He would make about a loaf or two a week, usually at night so that we'd have it in the morning. I would stay up doing homework and wait until the bread was done, just to eat the heel of the bread. It was still...

I am trying to figure out how to make a

sourdough starter, but there is so much contradictory information on the Internet, so many ways to make it. Do I store it on top of the refrigerator or inside it? Do I use only flour and water, or do I use a store bought starter or active dry yeast to get it going at the...

So much so that I baked my own for a long while. It's something I am looking forward to being able to do again. Maybe in the near future, if I keep up the exercises. Can almost smell it now. Mmmm

    Straight From The Oven

I used to be a baker - it was my first job when I left school - and to arrive at 04:30 - and start preparing the dough- proving-then cooking it - and it comes out, red hot - and that smell....ahhhhhhhhhh

Today was a first in several ways

for my bread making: first time I used my own sourdough starter; first time I did not just let the bread machine finish the job but rather used dough cycle, folded the dough, let it rise a second time, and baked in oven. The result is delicious! Oven baked crust is indeed much...
