    They Are Beautiful

I love watching the hummingbirds in my yard. They are beautiful and fascinating creatures. Currently we have 4 feeders in the front yard and 1 in the back. We found we had to have several feeders going to prevent a couple of the little bully birds from dominating the feeders. We...

    A Very Surreal Moment..

I loved the backyard I grew up in. It too me then was a place all my own to escape and be surrounded by nature. This is a memory of a time when I was grown and sitting in the mid-yard with my dad and simply being quiet. A beautiful ruby throated hummingbird flew right in front...

When I was 5 years old, my dad caught a humbling bird and I was taking it to school for show and tell. An other kid approached me less than a block from home and took the jar from me and released the humbling bird. I went home in tears and my dad gave me a ride to school.

    Odd Experience

Symbol Of Eternal Love, Joy And Celebration

Hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration.  The hummingbird's delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life's sweetest creation.

They Don't Care About the Color

Please don't waste your money on the "special red juice" they sell as hummingbird food.   Heat  1 part sugar to 4 parts water.     Fill it... and they will come.

This afternoon, I was cleaning my porch after weeks of neglect, when I heard the muffled chirp of a hummingbird. I turned to find one nervously hovering just 5 feet from me, near the feeder that I had just cleaned and re-filled as it was getting dark the day before, and could...

    They Aren't The Liars!

No hummingbird ever told another bird in the sky that he hummed. It was us humans that started saying that and now those poor little creatures don't have any credibility in the bird kingdom because everyone knows it's their wings that make that sound. That's why you never see...

    I Held One Once. :d

In the house I lived in as a teen there was a giant picture window at the front of our house. My stepmother was always a bit of a clean-freak that she'd  keep the window so clean that sometimes we'd find songbirds dead on our front porch, from crashing into the window.   So on...

I used to sit in the morning on the porch of

the place I used to live and watch the hummingbirds feed and fight over the feeders. There was this one that I named Squeaker, who'd squeak angrily at the other hummingbirds when they came too close to "his" feeder. He'd chase them off, squeaking angrily the whole time.

    After Work

My home is in the woods near the Pocono Mountains. After work I love sitting on the deck with a cold drink, a good cigar, and watching the hummingbirds as the sun goes down.   There are hanging flowers that they really enjoy as well as a feeder. They chase each other...

    I Hate Hummingbirds

I hate hummingbirds. They appear at my door around early April, and they are not in a good mood. They will literally hover a few feet from my face, and though we do not share a common language I can read their minds. “Where the #@#$%^& are the feeders?” It...

    First Sighting

I'd always thought hummingbirds were amazing, beautiful creatures, but I'd never seen one live before. Then a couple summers ago, I did. And promptly forgot about the people around me, forgot what I was supposed to be doing, forgot everything.  All I could do was stand there and...

Every summer, we go to a cottage with friends.

It's so beautiful, with breathtaking scenery and situated on a small lake. Last summer, we had a wonderful week and the day we were leaving, we started to pack up. The cottage is two stories so we have a large deck. We would dry our towels over the railings and I decided to...

When The Oak Leaves Are As Big As Bat's Ears...

    Advice From a Hummingbird

Sip the sweet moments. Let your true colors glow. Don't get your feathers ruffled over little things. Just wing it. Take yourself lightly. Keep your visits short and sweet.   ~~~a quote from a cool t-shirt

It was amazing to witness a hummingbird in flight, especially when it was up close! As a teenager I recall watching hummingbirds hovering often at a flowering sweet honeysuckle we had in the backyard. I'm sure it is not the first or last time I've enjoyed this experience but...

They showed up at our place about a month ago,

and I was suprised at how territorial they are. One male guards the feeders and runs the rest of them off. Going to have to get some more feeders and spread them around to avoid future problems. I didn't know they have a song either. Faint, high pitched and very brief.
