I Love It When Scent Brings a Memory

have you ever smelled something and it took you back to a time and place instantly? 1,965 People

    When i smell a certain perfume(Liz Clairborne)

I go back in time to when I was 19 or so and remember my girl friend at the time. The memory of her and the time we spent together comes flooding back and brings a smile to my face! All from a fragrance :)

Just the other day this happened to me.

I was driving and picked up this scent. It reminded me of my time overseas. I found myself smiling because I was lost in my thoughts for a moment.

    Scented Letters

Wow. Just before I was in the bathroom and caught a whiff of a smell I haven't smelled for years. It was very close to the scent that a girl friend of mine used to put on her letters when we were childhood correspondents. I never did know what it was and can't figure out now...

Scent is the strongest thing tied to memory

and as new memories come to me, I'll add them onto here. Even not so pleasant smells have triggered a semi-positive memory for me. For example, when I worked at a daycare, the smell of the 3 and 4-year-old's bathroom totally took me back to a first grade class I was in where the...

Ever since I was little my sense of smell has

been especially keen. I can smell when a certain food is cooking from the garage or when a person was just in the room and what they smell like. It's to the point where people will come to smell I like.

    School Days

    I was fascinated to learn

that our sense of smell bypasses our brain's logic center, and sends information directly to our long-term memory for "intake processing." Psychologists believe this is why the sense of smell can trigger a full-body memory in ways that no other sense can.

It is the saddest of all senses. The scent floats. It's there and it is gone after a while. And every time it is slightly different, even when it is the perfume of a woman. Yet in its myriads of expressions, as many as the stars, they carry a world and are unmistakable...

and the exhaust smell flashed me back to our jr high bus lot in the winter. We'd skate across the icy mix of diesel and snow in our boots, secretly hoping we'd *accidentally* miss the bus and get to hang longer with other pre-pubescent teens. Sometimes we'd forge notes and ride...

A loved one long gone, a place forgotten. A pocket of time tucked away years ago. A drifting scent erases the space between and transports the heart, making it yesterday. Sometimes a sweet surprise, sometimes a heart re-broken. Always amazing.
