I met Maya Angelou at a party my dad made me go

to like 3-4 years ago. She helped me turn myself into the young woman I am today. I told her my story and she replied with; "Baby no one should have to go through that, but you never let it get the best of you. You keep rising up out of the ashes of despair every time the world...

I know why the caged bird sings.

. The free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wings in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet...

    Love It

I love her work, I wish I had someone like her to look up to when I was growing up!.  I like how it's like she's speaking to you directly in her work.  I recently read her newest book Letter to My Daughter, and I'm not going to pretend as if it didn't make me cry. ...

    I didn't know of her

until just this year. But what I've learned of her has awed and inspired me. I am so sad to hear of her death. If you haven't heard, she died this morning; May 28. Its so sad, she was such an amazing woman.

The Most Amazing Poet of Our Day

Maya Angelou Writes from somewhere beyond her heart, I think somehow she starts in her toes and works her way up, not missing a single atom to pull every iota of herself into what she writes.  I've read some of her work and been stunned by the honesty and grit of what she...

    Phenomenal Woman

I 've read her books and just can't pick one that I like above the others. But.. her poem, Phenomenal Woman. That, perhaps more than any other passage, poem or prose I have heard speaks volumes about how I feel. It says everything that I wish I cold convey, and so much more...

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings....

...was the first Maya Angelou book I ever read.  It is one of the books that although I first read it 15 years ago, has always stayed in my memory as it's so powerful and meaningful.

    I Just Wanted It Here

Phenomenal Woman Pretty women wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies. I say, It's in the reach of my arms The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips. I'm a...

    Still I Rise

Still I Rise You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my...

    One Of My Favorite Authors

    Phenomenal Woman

I come from a family of readers,

writers too. As a person so happily insignificant as I, compared with the good Doctor, I feel I should just wish her Peace, and say Thank You. I know that her significance within me will continue to grow and inspire and affect my life to come, as it surely has in the past year...

    My Favorite Maya Angelou Story

Maya Angelou is indeed a phenomenal woman. Here is my favorite Maya Angelou story. I hope I get it right. Maya said many years ago when things were not as liberal as they are now, she boarded a plane for a trip over seas. Her seat was next to a rich, snobbish woman. The woman did...
