The Hall . Similar to Hampton Court

but on a smaller scale ! Richard 3rd held court here as did Henry 8th . The medieval kitchen is complete.

Exterior picture by me of Gainsborough old Hall.

Virtually unchanged since mediaeval times . It was the hub of the area before the town developed and took more and more land . If your near I would recommend visiting .

I live near Gainsborough Old Hall.

I just love this building . In the care of a group of enthusiastic volunteers . Also funded by the County Council and English Heritage . If you arrive at dinner time during term time you get treated to a medieval banquet . The music the costumes. Worth watching .

Another view of Gainsborough Old Hall.

A virtually complete medieval manor house . It is mentioned in the guide books that the toilets were flushed out by the local river Trent ! It's tidal and I guess it raises the water table just enough to clean them out . Quite sophisticated for its time :)

It amazes me that a building can last a

thousand years or more . Yet some modern buildings last only a few decades before they become redundant . My old school was one such building . It had flat roofs and had been vandelised. The design was brilliant . How far should we go to save modern buildings from...

    Medieval Architecture

I have always loved the massiveness and "detail of medieval buildings. I read "Pillars of  the earth" by  Ken Folet (historical fiction)  and just finished "World without End" which was sequel to "Pillars of the Earth".   Both books were fascinating and good...

    In Britain your never

that far away from a bit medieval architecture . Especially in our cities . Most still follow the original medieval town plans . This is a building in Lincoln . Off course a lot of modern facades hide medieval structures . Look up at the floors above the shop fronts . You...

    Big Fan

I have always been fascinated with anything medieval, including architecture. The forethought that these ancient engineers had when designing buildings, and particularly castles and fortifications was amazing. As both a trained mason, and a civil engineer, I can really...

Took my 1st wife (and later,

my 2nd) to dine in Frankenstein's castle while in Europe when we were younger, still have one of the dinner napkins we stole! Fantastic, the old ruins shower the travails of time and battle, if nothing of the old, inner beauty of the owners, where it's true value lies.
