To me Escher's work is a visual depiction

that the impossible is possible, that contradictions can coexist, that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and the imaginative and creative mystery surpasses its explanation. :)

I Can Look At His Art For Hours

I am convinced that Escher saw things differently than most people.  I can look at one of his sketches a hundred times and see something different every time.  I am typical...I don't really know much about art, but I know what I like.  Any type of art that stirs...

    Escher Is Brilliant

I think Escher is brilliant.  I'll never understand quite how his mind worked the way it did, but I'm glad it did.  I have a large art book of his work, and every now and then I take it out a marvel.  How on earth could he figure all that out!!

I love how the images tessellate

and come out of each other in many of his works. It makes me wonder - am I painting a picture, or is the picture painting me? A little like the zhuangzi question of - am I a man dreaming he is a butterfly or am I a butterfly dreaming he is a man? It talks to me about our dreams...

    Sit and Stare

for hours, it seems. Each time I look at one of his graphics, I find something new, a twist I never saw before or a reflection that I would swear wasn't there last time. I always want to know how Escher created such complex images. I love the hands, the reptiles and the...
