Roaches do Math... No joke!

"Research has shown that group-based decision-making is responsible for complex behavior such as resource allocation. In a study where 50 cockroaches were placed in a dish with three shelters with a capacity for 40 insects in each, the insects arranged themselves in two shelters with 25 insects in each, leaving the third shelter empty."

Exsqueese me, In layman terms that means ...Not only do roaches know how to do math, they help each other (group based decision) reach the right answer... with chemicals! No beads to count, slide rule or calculators. People could learn a lot from these bugs we constantly spray, bait or stomp to death.
"When the capacity of the shelters was increased to more than 50 insects per shelter, all of the cockroaches arranged themselves in one shelter. Researchers found a balance between cooperation and competition exists in group decision-making behavior found in cockroaches. The models used in this research can also explain the group dynamics of other insects and animals."
That means roaches ain't the only ones what can do that. Don't you find that more than just a little weird?
A pheromone is a secreted or excreted chemical factor that triggers a social response in members of the same species. Pheromones are chemicals capable of acting outside the body of the secreting individual to impact the behavior of the receiving individual. There are alarm pheromones, food trail pheromones, sex pheromones, and many others that affect behavior or physiology. Their use among insects has been particularly well documented. In addition, some vertebrates and plants communicate by using pheromones."
Pheromone, thats a weird word. What is really weird, there are an innumerable species of little critters and plants that spit out their own combo of chemicals for whatever they want, and none of them get crossed up in the process.
 Quotes are from wikipedia.
Except those made by me for my own secret demented pleasure.

That's interesting... perhaps that's why they've survived as they have. You know the joke that after a nuclear attack, only roaches will be left.
