4 Birds In the Backyard, & 31 Eggs In the Incubator!

I love raising chickens!  They are my favorite pet by far!  I love how they follow me around and eat treats from my hand.  And they make the silliest sounds.  Best of all, they keep the squirrels away!  I can't wait to see what they think of the snow this...

    Relentless Predator

Our modest chicken population keeps taking hits from a dedicated foe that visits every night. Every now and then, it gets lucky and gets into the hen house before we shut the door to the hen house, which is really a barn area usually reserved for a fancy sports car...now covered...

    Eggstra Fun!

I just love our chickens, and fresh eggs are the best! We have six Speckled Sussex, five hens and a rooster. We've had the hens for a year, but we just got the little rooster yesterday. He's only eight weeks old and too little for our hens, but he'll grow. He...

Love Those Fresh Eggs and the Reliable Alarm Clock.

I'm not sure how long I've raised chickens.  I was trying to figure this out a couple of days ago when my oldest rooster died.  I was planning on hatching out a batch of eggs this spring, but waiting for warmer weather, but this tragic event sped things up.  ...

    You know that awkward moment

when you're being stared down by all the roosters in the coop. It's almost like they're suspicious of you. Lol and you're like "What?? What did I do? I'm just sitting here on the steps."

    Barnyard Buddies

I miss having chickens roaming my yard. I used to have a flock of approx. 20 chickens & 4 geese at my place in Washington.  I'd let them out to forage in the morning & secure them in their coop at night. There's something calming about having chickens roaming...

    Green Eggs and Ham

I never raised the ham (oink, oink) but I used to raise Americauna chickens. Their eggs are in lovely colors ranging form olive green to turquoise blue. They were so lovely. I enjoyed my chickens a lot. I wish I had room for chickens now. Hello to all you chicken raisers out...

    My Girls

So, I decided this spring to get some hens. Who wouldn't want fresh eggs in their backyard with relatively no effort? So I began building a 10'x10' pen just inside the wood line of my backyard. My initial plan included building an adjoining coop for the birds but I think have...

    Love For Pure Breeds

I've been raising chickens for around ten years now. Up until now only using broody bantam hens, but this year I bought an incubator and brooder. I have two dozen lavender Araucana eggs in it hatching at the moment. I have owned a range of crossbreeds and pure breeds over the...
