The Boxcar Children are another great series of books which my kids love, along with Hank the Cowdog and The Great Brain.

Can I Get a Dog? - which is about a kid who wants a dog, and him trying to convince his grandma to get him a pet. The kids love them! I also like any Dr. Seuss classic.
