I Stutter

Personal Stories, Advice, and Support 630 People

I'm in 8th grade. When I'm in class

and my teachers call on me, I get petrified. I'm so scared I'm going to stutter because I know I'm going to stutter. I stare at the words on my book or paper and hope to God that the words come and out and when they don't, I just want to cry. I can feel everyone's eyes on me...

When someone who does not stutter gives me

advice....something I do not like. Only a stutterer knows the feeling, the outcome, the hardships stuttering has on a person. Day to day things become a struggle. The constant stress it brings, and how it feels, the binding in the throat, the twisting of the stomach, and...

    I'm 16, a Sophomore in high school,

and I stutter. My stuttering, I feel, is restricting me from doing things I want to do, or saying things I want to say. But it's more than that. I can't express my feelings, I can't share a good idea or join in on a conversation, I can't order what I actually want at restaurants...

    I've stuttered for as long

as I could remember. All of the speech therapy only helped it slightly, but now I talk too fast. It sometimes makes me afraid to actually speak to people, I don't want to waste 5 seconds of their lives while I'm trying to say meaningless jibberish.

    Stress

I stutter when I'm under stress.  I get caught in a loop of a phrase or sound and well....get stuck.  Life would be so much easier with just the written word when it gets hairy crazy.  But with the written word, you can't judge tonality and then stress comes and I get caught...

So it's been 13 years now. And it has been a severe one. I used to get really bullied in school but now in college i have a wonderful group of friends who are patient enough to wait until i complete. But sometimes its too exhausting to talk. The words just don't come out.
