I Think Praying Is a Waste of Time and Energy

Personal Stories, Advice, and Support 198 People

Hey, if it feels good, do it, just don't bother me with it.

I'll respect your prayers , but I don't have to play along, and will not play "follow the leader" into the twin towers or to the new Inquisition...

I Am Sorry People Feel This Way

To feel this way is basically saying I feel like God does not exisit or God does not matter. Just be careful because to talk like this is heading toward blasphemy, which there is no forgiveness. I love you all. God bless.

    Nobody Is Listening

Until recently, I believed in a higher power, an all knowing supernatural being. But I cannot ignore the fact that not one single prayer of mine has ever been answered. I used to pray to God for guidance, for help with financial issues, for just one friend to come into my life...

    Not Always

i disagree. i pray with my mother whenever she calls because she doesnt know i dont believe in god anymore. however, me praying with her does make her happy which makes me happy. Other then that you might as well be talking to a wall. has the same effect.

    It Is

Praying can give you some "relaxation", but you can achieve that other ways too. The purpose of praying is to keep you low. Not knowing who you are. Disconnected with your very own HIGH SELF. I doubt if more than 1% of all prayers get answered. You can get...

    A Good Excuse

Prayer is an excuse for people to do absolutely nothing but still feel righteous.

    What Kind?

The group doesn't specify... I'm assuming its supposed to be a prayer to a specific deity?

I Don't Think Prayer Is a Waste, But...

I don't think prayer is a waste of time and energy... I think praying to a god to make everything right for you, and not putting any effort in on your own part is a pretty big waste of time, though, unless it makes you feel better, and later you get up and do something...

Thanks For Praying, But Did You Also Sacrifice a Goat?

This story's title is taken from Dan Dennett's great article "Thank Goodness". You can read it here: http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/dennett06/dennett06_index.html There are some things in religion that simply make no sense. To me, praying is one of them. I think...

    What Waste Of Time?

Prayer takes no energy. Prayer is the same as love. Love isn't a waste of time. Praying is loving. Be blessed by Love. God is love. I'll pray for unending love for all.

    I Completely Agree.

But as my DS told me one day There aren't any Athiest in foxholes. This leads me to my question even though you don't believe in god or prayer have you ever been in a situation where you were like what could it hurt! Hail mary and so forth

Is This Where All The Cool Kids Hang Out?

I think that thinking about whether or not praying is a waste of time and energy is a waste of time and energy. Not to mention, bizarre.

    And Money.

I've always been grateful no one forced me to church or catechism classes when I was a child. I really had no interest in religion or prayer but am now rather fed up with having religion shoved down my throat. Separation of church and state was obliterated by Bush. He told us to...

    Do Something

I think praying is a major waste of time and energy. The best way for me to express my irritation with this is probably to provide a list of my annoyances so as to not be incoherent. - If you believe in an omniscient god, he already knows everything that is going to happen...

    Duh?

I think it's stupid.  I mean, can't he just hear your thoughts anyway?  Isn't it like the same thing?  Or does folding your hands and bowing your head somehow open a magical portal (which, magic is, of course, evil according to the Bible) to which...

    Prayer Is Good.

Prayer is akin to meditation. God hears and is wise enough not to give us all that we ask for. Remember, God does not promise us a perfect life. Only a perfect after life.

    Wink Wink

I am way drunk, so this is a good time for a story to go with this experience.  I had a habit of saying three prayers every night.  I would say the Our Father and Hail Mary with my father.  Then I would say a personal prayer.  I would talk to my stuffed...
