I Want To Explore An Abandoned Mental Asylum

Personal Stories, Advice, and Support 520 People

    Me Too

I would absolutely LOVE to go explore an abandoned mental asylum. Of course, I would try to get the proper permission first... Why do I want to do this? Not only because I am strange, but I love seeing the past hands on. Even if it was a dark time in our history.

    Town Farm Road

A lot of towns around New England each have a "town farm road" which leads to (not surprisingly) the town farm, which was the compassionate alternative to an asylum. Basically, from what I understand, (I've only been inside one of them) they had some staff there, but mainly...

    Would Be Interesting...

To be honest, Asylums scare the living hell out of me, and really disturb me. I feel almost as if the patients mental illnesses are contagious and like my mind is absorbing them.... But oddly enough, if the place was abandoned, I wouldn't mind exploring it. I'd still feel an...

Winter 1985. I was in New York city for a conference. One evening, a buddy and I took the cable device that takes people to Roosevelt Island in the East River. It wasn't too cold. There were people walking about, even though it was a winter evening, because there are nice...

    Whitby Psych

This is a movie about about an abandoned mental institution. A team of men go in to remove some asbestos, and get caught up in the atmosphere. It's a pretty darn good movie.

My Painting Studio Was An Asylum Cell

The building for my art school was a Victorian era asylum that had been closed a number of years earlier. Each student was given one of the cells as a studio. The coat of white paint on the walls did not conceal what had been scratched into the brick walls, or the old iron...
