I was brought up wearing the kilt and was given girl's underwear to wear with it, most lads that wore the kilt back then had girl's knickers under their kilts and we never thought much about it except to see what colour they were. The majority of my chums wore bottle green but several wore navy blue, I just wondered what others feel about boys (and Men) wearing girl's school knickers under their kilts because I still wear green knickers with my kilt.

I remember the knickers were much more comfortable than any alternative at that time and smart and, of course, because most boys and men wore the kilt that way it was perfectly acceptable. Nowadays, I would be concerned that a 'flash' of knickers might put off a potential kiltie if he felt that that was the way he would have to go and that wouldn't be good.

I too was brought up wearing kilts as a boy and since i had 3 female cousins and we more or less all lived together i was also given navy blue school knickers to wear underneath. They were really comfy and didnt look out of place if seen when you sat or the wind blew your kilt. It was accepted then as quite normal for boys to wear kilts and underwear was always worn. I wear kilts often now and still favour the knickers. They are not so easy to come by now but there are still some stores in Glasgow where I can buy them. They can also be ordered on the internet too. I always wear colours that blend with the kilts i wear. I remember being told in my teens that when wearing the kilt black knickers/pants go with anything or red with red tartans green with green/blue etc but never to wear white. I stuck to that advice.

Yes, kiltieman, those were the 'rules' and, before that, it was tartan undertrews in a Victorian "everything must match" kind of way. But nowadays I suspect that most men don't tuck in their shirt tails so that grey or fawn might actually be less conspicuous (although the dancing fraternity seem to stick with navy blue).

Be that as it may, I would say to anyone who might be thinking of wearing the kilt that the girls' knickers phase is really a thing of the past in Scotland. Dignified and inconspicuous men's underwear of whatever variety is the comfortable norm or, if you might want to take off your kilt in public, gym or swimming shorts are also widely worn.

UP WITH THE KILT!

Re Jaggythistle's comment, it's interesting to see how things change over the generations. Anyone got any memories of what their fathers/uncles wore in the 20s/30s/40s? My father owned tartan undertrews but I don't think he ever wore them, preferring ordinary white woolen/cotton trunks (boxer shorts). He claimed that they were much more comfortable and were pretty much like the drawers he had been issued with as a kiltie in the trenches of the First War.

I still keep a pair of green knickers for dances and wear navy blue or black underpants otherwise.  My son wears navy blue when competing in highland dancing and green the rest of the time. Not 'like father like son then', I hear you say! My grandson has just started wearing red pants to match his new kilt.  He tells me that his friends think they are cool. I have to say that none of my friends ever thought that wearing coloured knickers under their kilt was cool.  But no-one could suffer the embarrassment of showing white underpants with their flappy legs. And the elastic gave a certain sense of security.  Old habits die hard and I still tuck my shirt in.  A flash of white on a windy day would bring back a stab of instant humiliation.

What a colourful family you have,  H1ghlander!

What is the advantage of green knickers for dancing over navy y-fronts?

I agree about the white underpants yet most of my chums deserted their previous convictions and took to white y-fronts when they first appeared in the 50s.

I too always tuck my shirt inside. wear dark green or navy/black mens slips a lot. they are handy and comfy.especially if you have to spend a penny. I wear underwear on most occassions. out for a day in a kilt you just dont know what can crop up.
