I When I Was A Kid We Actually Went Outside And Played

Personal Stories, Advice, and Support 5,234 People

    I loved going outside

as a child. There were so many trees in need of climbing! So many birds to chase and so many trails to explore with my bike. Outside was where I wanted to be at all times. Sitting in the house in front of the tv was no fun. I did not understand how kids could play video games...

We would have dirt clod wars.

There was a deep unpaved drainage ditch behind the houses across the street from us. After a heavy rain there would be a great deal of debris left behind. We would gather things up (plywood, fiberglass pieces, 2x4's, etc.) and build forts. We would choose sides, girls against...

It wasn't a choice most of the time.

Grandma woke us up, fed us, made us clean while waving her cane at our heads then kicked us out until lunch. After lunch we had to go right back outside.

Computers and electronics ruined it all

for the younger generation. It's easily addicting. And I, who am addicted to technology am admitting to this. Playing outside is rare anymore unless you play sports. And now, if you do play outside, parents have to keep a constant watch because of child predators. So sad how...

we drank water from the garden hose that usually was lifted from the horses water tank. Yep, bee stings, rusty nails in a foot a time or two, I even got ran over by a car, busted my head wide open( no helmet then ). I was in third grade when that happened. Yes a whole bunch of...

I played hard and have scars to prove it.

Every scar has a memory. There is one on my left elbow that I got from playing basketball. I tried to save the ball from going out and fell. I had more skin on the pavement than I had on my elbow. I have a scar on my left inner thigh from attemtping to hop a chainlink fence. I...

I Used To Love Playing Outside

I don't get today's kids...they don't want to play outside. It's no wonder some kids suffer from obesity. They would rather be playing video games and be online all day rather then playing outside. When I was growing up...I used to roller skate, ride a bike, play tag, dodge ball...
