Changing the Lives of Little Girls: Experience Project Announces "More to Me" Program for Supporting Positive Body Image
February 15, 2008
San Francisco, California -
Young girls are more afraid of getting "fat" than nuclear war, cancer, or their parents dying, according to the University of Colorado Wellness Department. Our culture has become obsessed with physical appearance, so much so that young children are often confused and mislead about how to evaluate and appreciate their individual value.
Experience Project (http://www.experienceproject.com), the leading online personalized support destination that links members who share life experiences, today announces the launch of the MORE to ME Declaration, the first online petition calling for the funding of positive body image programs in elementary schools.
MORE to ME is a campaign that brings to light the misconception our society has when looking at what it means to be a woman. There is MORE to ME than my body, represents a larger social movement to change the way women look at themselves. It urges people to acknowledge and appreciate the many things which make them "Me".
The More to ME Declaration is the first online petition to raise support for changing this cultural norm by educating and inspiring youth. It is important to teach children these lessons at a young age. According to licensed therapist Jessica Hackman, "When children are helped to build a positive, healthy self-image, they have a stronger social defense system. They are better able to protect themselves from the attacks on self esteem that can occur in adolescence and young adulthood."
The MORE to ME campaign is focusing heavily on grabbing the attention of college students, both men and female. The American youth have traditionally been a source of activism and change through the course of time. "College students have been fundamental sources of change and we believe by involving their passion and energy in the MORE to ME campaign we have a chance at bringing this issue to light," says Armen Berjikly, the CEO and Founder of Experience Project.
Experience Project hopes the MORE to ME campaign will support the movement that is already happening within the area of eating, body, and health. According to Experience Project's Social Cause Marketing Manager, Sarah Silverman, "When we came up with the MORE to ME concept I began to discover the smaller, grass roots movement that was happening below the surface. It really inspired the team to want to help this get some attention."
There are several organizations, dietitians, and school systems which are addressing these issues in a preventative way. The hope is by proactively helping youth to deal with the pressures from media and society, there will be a massive decrease in many longer term problems, such as eating disorders. The campaign will work to collect online signatures and dedications from millions of people across the US. This support, along with a letter, will be sent to influential policy and educational leaders.
