When crude oil is $30 a barrel or more, synfuel becomes an economically viable alternative. It's high grade enough to power military fighter jets and was used by the Germans in WWII.
Montana, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Virgina all have enormous amounts of coal for the harvesting and the technology has advanced enough that:
1. Gases and solid byproducts can also be harvested for other purposes, thereby making it an eco-friendly industry.
2. Land reclamation has been demonstrated in Montana, restoring mine sites to their previous geography and plant life.
