Game Instructions on How to Play Solitaire

Klondike Solitaire is the world's most popular solitaire game. It's played with a single deck.

The starting layout has seven columns, with the first column having 1 card, the 2nd has two cards, the 3rd column has three cards, all the way to 7 cards. Each column has its top card face-up at the beginning of the solitaire game. All the other cards are face-down. The remaining 24 cards are left face-down, forming a stock pile.

The objective of the game is to move each of the four aces, if they appear, to the foundation piles at the top of the screen. Further, your goal in Klondike Solitaire s to build up each foundation pile in suit from Ace to King (A-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-J-Q-K).

To play, click on the stock pile to turn cards face-up onto a secondary pile, sometimes known as a Solitaire wastepile. The top card of the pile may be played. You can also play any card on the game that's face up. Cards within the game can be built downwards in sequence and alternating color. A whole set of cards may be relocated as a solitary unit from one pile to another when they 'fit.'

When you move or complete a pile, you'll get a face-down card. Click it to turn it over and make the card playable. If a space is created in the tableau, it may only be filled with a king. The stock can be cycled through over and over. The stock may be recycled from the wastepile when it becomes empty. The game ends when you have completed 2-Ace on the top four piles for each suit, and depleted the main playing board-- in which case you've won, or when there are simply no more moves possible (and then you've lost).

It is known by a number of other names, including Canfield Solitaire, Chinaman Solitaire, Demon Solitaire, Fascination Solitaire, Small Triangle Solitaire

Solitaire games likely originated in the 1750s. They were first mentioned in a German game book in 1783, where it was described as a challenging game of cards where players would alternate, or even play with separate decks. Playing by one's self (solitaire) likely originated when people were practicing for the multi-player version.

A myth that Napoleon Bonaparte played Solitaire while confined to Elba (in his exile), is just that-- a myth.

It was also around the early 19th century that solitaire became popular within English society (it had previously penetrated French society, known there as 'Patience.) Crown Prince Albert was an avid player, and multiple rule books were published in the late 1800s.

By the 1950s, the modern solitaire games were in place. There are now literally thousands of books detailing thousands of Solitaire variations.

As Solitaire came bundled with almost all major operating systems, Solitaire became wildly popular in the 1980s, and is widely played by all generations.
