Boredom is insufficient stimulation to the brain. When there is sufficient stimulation, neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) carry these "messages" to the reward centers of the brain and you feel good. Interest feels good. Fascination feels great. When your brain does not receive enough stimulation, you feel mildly uncomfortable or quite uncomfortable or "bored out of your gourd, depending on how intolerant you are of boredom. Why do you have insufficient boredom? If nothing is happening, for example. If everything stays the same or you are inactive, for another example. If you are restrained from doing something interesting, for example, if you are required to sit in a chair for a long time and not wiggle and look alert when someone is talking about something that doesn't interest you. If you have ADHD/ADD, an attention disorder characterized by great boredom, among other traits. The cure for boredom is to have an active imagination, to do something physically active, to cultivate an interest in more things, to change some things in your life, to begin new projects, to learn new things, to find out what your true interests are, to take control of your life, to have the freedom to actively pursue your interests. I write about boredom in ThePowerOfBoredom.com and I myself am never bored except when I don't have the freedom to act or imagine, and that's rare.
