Order of Operations (unless told not to use them) YOU ALWAYS USE THEM! PEMDAS, for those that forgot "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally," Parentheses, Exponents (and roots), Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction. In order from left to right do all parentheses, THEN all exponents/roots, THEN multiply/divide, THEN add/subtract -.-
4x4+4x4+4-4x4
16 + 16 +4-16
32+4-16
36-16
20
Not all calcs do order of operations for you, so if the calc "gives the wrong answer," YOU PUT IT IN WRONG

there is a math and there is a calculator... :S
if u are lazy and stupid u will use a calculator and u can get whatevah answer u want; if u want true u should know something about Order of Operations - BODMAS...
and FYI correct answer is 20

gud 1

no parenthesis or brackets then MDAS applies as a rule of mathematice,,,the correct answer is 260

explain

You state PEMDAS and then you still get it wrong.

If you use a calculator the way it is 4x4+4x4+4-4x4 it comes up 320. If you bracket it off yes comes up 20.

so, which is correct?

neither

really

(4x4)+(4x4)+4-(4x4)
16+16+4-16
20.
Because they fail at math.

boyyyyyyyy...this is not a sum of class 2........... I bet,,,,,,,,,,,

Obviously you failed math as well.
4×4+4×4+4-4×4=?
P.E.M.D.A.S.
4×4=16
16×4=64
64×4=256
256+4=260
260-4=256
256+4=260
IF you do the order of of operations correctly, this is the answer you should get. The order of operations from above is please excuse my dear Aunt Sally. Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, Division, addition, subtraction. Considering there is no parentheses exponents then you do the next which is, multiplication. Then you do all the adding and subtracting

you are ******* retarded

let me clarify for you, since you are such an idiot your brain capacity is lacking.

The equation is as follows. 4 x 4 + 4 x 4 + 4 - 4 x 4.
You are correct it's PEMDAS.
There is no P or E in this equation, so let's do the M next. Remember to not touch the addition yet. so you will multiply the 4x4 but leave the +4 and - 4 alone for now, so you get 4 x 4 = 16, then immediately after that is another 4x4, so that is 16 as well. We have a +4, so we ignore that, for now, then we have a 4x4 at the end, which is another 16.

The equation now looks like this: 16 + 16 + 4 - 16. NOW let's do the addition. 16 + 16 + 4 = 36. 36 - 16 = 20.

L2math.

Thank you! No one can wrap their mind around 260 being the answer. Everyone on G+ is saying 20. I guess we're the 22% 👍

4*4+4*4+4-4*4
There a many ways to solve this equation, but there is only one correct mathematical answer... 20
SHOW YOUR WORK / SIMPLIFY & P.E.M.D.A.S.

Parenthesis... NO
Exponents... YES, 4*4 is an exponent. 4*4 is 4^2 (or, 4 to the 2nd power. ^ is the symbol for "to the power of") so...
4^2+4^2+4-4^2
SIMPLIFY THE EXPONENTS... 4^2=16
16+16+4-16
Since there is a +16 and a -16, they cancel each other out. 16-16=0
16+4=20

16+16=32+4=36
then subtract...
36-16=20

There are even more ways to equate this, very poorly written, problem.
4*4+4*4+4-4*4

SIMPLIFY (THE HELL OUT OF IT)... 4*4 is (4+4+4+4) so...
(4+4+4+4)+(4+4+4+4)+4-(4+4+4+4)
16+16+4-16
32+-12 (32+negative12) or (32-12) =20

There are still MANY more ways to work this out. And EVERY time it will equal 20 as long as you are doing it right.

Order of Operations

PEMDAS

Parenthesis

Exponents

Multiplication

Division

Subtraction

all problems are read left to right

step 1 Check for grouping symbols like parentheses

none present

step 2 check for exponents, There are none as written but note: any thing multiplied by itself is by definition exponential: a*a=a^2

the symbol ^ means to the power of so we pronounce this a to the power of 2 or a squared.

the 2 comes from the fact that there are 2 a terms being multiplied.

another way to write this equation is

4^2+4^2+4-4^2

so we simplify the exponents:

4^2=16

so

16+16+4-16

you can do this 2 ways

16+16= 32+4 = 36-16=20

2. by the commutative property of addition you can commute one of the +16 terms to be next to the negative 16, if you look at it like everything is addition and you are adding a negative to a positive instead of subtracting.

so you are actually re-writing the equation as

16+4+16-16

a-a = 0

any number minus itself equals zero

16+4+0 or 16+4 = 20

or you can look at it this way 4 x 4 = (4+4+4+4)

so (4+4+4+4)+(4+4+4+4)+4-(4+4+4+4) this is really 4*9-16=36-16=20.

Math is how you look at it. There are so many ways to solve one problem. as long as you play by the rules and you don't "cheat" :D it is a great way to get students to think outside the box, problem solve and critically think. these are all vitally important skills in life. I hope you liked my explanation of question.

i do not like this

I can't just decide how to pronounce a Russian word, for example. I have to follow the rules of that language. It's the same with Maths. You have to follow the rules of reading mathematics, which is brackets, then powers, then multiplication or division left to right, then finally addition or subtraction left to right. Some people remember this with a PEMDAS or BOMDAS acronym. So for this question:
No brackets.
No powers.
Do all the multiplication parts: 16+16+4-16
Now add and subtract left to right: 32+4-16=36-16=20

You are correct that it equals 20, but there ARE exponents (or, "powers"). Any number multiplied times itself is, by definition, an exponent.

320

(4x4) + (4x4) + 4 - (4x4) = 20
16 + 16 + 4 - 16 = 20

We are told in school that you must do the multiplication in a problem first then do the addition and subtraction.

ok I got it

20

Because you're wrong it's 20 not 68.

(4x4=16)+(4x4=16) = 32 +4 =36 - (4x4=16) =20

thankyou

4*4=16,16+4=20,20*4=80,80+4=84,
84-4=80,80*4=320

4x4=16+4=20x4=80+4+84-4+80x4=320

20

I got 48

29

Omg you failed to answer this.
4x4+4x4+4-4x4=20
Put the parenthesis in the right place if you need them.
(4x4)+(4x4)+4-(4x4)=
(16)+(16)+4-(16)=
36-16=20

yes I did

order of operations....answer is 20, you can try it many different ways and you will end up with a different answer....but order of operations is the way to go! PRMDAS

I heard that a lot

No... you can try it many different ways and if you are doing it correctly the answer will always be 20. And there are MANY different ways to solve this problem.

(4x4) + (4x4)(+4-4)x4=128
(16) + (16) + (0) x4=128
