If you use a calculator the way it is 4x4+4x4+4-4x4 it comes up 320. If you bracket it off yes comes up 20.

You are correct it's PEMDAS.
There is no P or E in this equation, so let's do the M next. Remember to not touch the addition yet. so you will multiply the 4x4 but leave the +4 and - 4 alone for now, so you get 4 x 4 = 16, then immediately after that is another 4x4, so that is 16 as well. We have a +4, so we ignore that, for now, then we have a 4x4 at the end, which is another 16.
The equation now looks like this: 16 + 16 + 4 - 16. NOW let's do the addition. 16 + 16 + 4 = 36. 36 - 16 = 20.

There are even more ways to equate this, very poorly written, problem.
SIMPLIFY (THE HELL OUT OF IT)... 4*4 is (4+4+4+4) so...
32+-12 (32+negative12) or (32-12) =20
There are still MANY more ways to work this out. And EVERY time it will equal 20 as long as you are doing it right.

I can't just decide how to pronounce a Russian word, for example. I have to follow the rules of that language. It's the same with Maths. You have to follow the rules of reading mathematics, which is brackets, then powers, then multiplication or division left to right, then finally addition or subtraction left to right. Some people remember this with a PEMDAS or BOMDAS acronym. So for this question:<br />

Do all the multiplication parts: 16+16+4-16<br />
Now add and subtract left to right: 32+4-16=36-16=20
