I'd have to agree with halcyondaysofillusion. And I just want to add, just explain to him it's a nightmare, and that it's not real. Try to be reassuring and patient. Maybe you can take him to the zoo to learn about real snakes, and realise they are fascinating instead of a threat. Knowledge can be reassuring. Especially since a young kid hasn't had as much life experience as you or I have had, so all they know of the world is based on ideas and guesses. Maybe if he learns more about snakes in a careful environment, it will help take the fear out of them for him.

Read the holly tale at night before sleeping and teach him to pray to the angel guard before sleeping. use some instrumetal music at the same time. Aloud him to relax when is on bed ready to sleep teach him to breath deeeply and relax.
Any how try to reemember what happened to him before the first nightmare,.,. any relative fights¿? did he pressence any "hard" sex relation between their parents?¿

My children also had night terrors at that age though they were never able to articulate what their dreams were about. They sometimes seemed to be asleep and still dreaming when their eyes were open. That was a little scary for me as well. Thankfully, it didn't last for any more than a few months before they grew out of it.
