    It is shia muslims.
    Muslims are split in two major 'groups' and most of them are sunni, the rest are shia.
    Shia hurt themselves on a special day. There is a long explanation for this, some event that happened a long time ago. I don't want to say anything that is wrong, so try to google it :)

    But this guy cut his back open so bad he almost died and if a doctor wasnt there he would of bleed to death. Why dont they stick to whipping

    There's also a tradition within Christianity of what's known as 'self-mortification'. As far as I can tell it's intended as a symbolic sacrifice to appease a god.
