Wow. I would have to wonder what's up with the kid's parents. Can't that cause an overbite, much like thumb-sucking?

family story about my cousin (who is now in her 50's)

she wanted to take her pacifier to school when she started and kicked up a fuss about it. My aunt said to her okay you can take it to school but you can only use it when the other kids use theirs. Well she found out none of the other kids used them and just stopped using hers overnight.

I guess that's better than breast-feeding.

NOT GOOD. My son is 19 months and I weaned him off at 17 months....it can really harm their oral development and cause speech impediments.

Nothing compares to the real thing. Playtex is pleased. Hey though have you ever seen a nipple that is bent up like a pacifier?

That isn't good. I can see the dentist bills piling up now. My son is under two and only uses one when he gets tired.

I have a thought on this subject and it is the same for breastfeeding...if you are old enough to ask for it, then you are probably to old to have it.

Yeah, those parents should have taken that away 4 years ago. That's really bad. Its bad for their teeth.

There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding! Breastfeeding a six year old - that's creepy! But I have never heard of an American mother nursing her six year old. Most of the nursing moms in my moms club wean before 1 year. Very few of us make it to the second year. I have never personally met anyone who has nursed longer.

I wonder if there are other issue with this child. Maybe not. My step son still had his security blanket until he was 9 or 10. When he had a sleep over he would not use it. As soon as he was alone he would use it. I tried to get him to stop using it. My wife too the right attitude. Do not make a fuss. He will stop using it when he is ready. He is a professional civil engineer. Married with one child. He turned out ok.

when my daughter was 2 1/2 i told her the pacifier came & took it to give to babies whose moms & dads didn't have money to buy them one, & left her a doll in its place. she cried in a way that totally broke my heart like no other cry she's ever done, but by the next day she was content to play with the doll.

Yes, things like pacifiers should be taken away by the time they are 1 1/2 IMO. Bottles too and they should be introduced to real sippy cups, not the ones with the holes that require sucking like a bottle.

On the flip side, why are we so phobic of oral fixations ? Yes, thumb sucking/pacifiers are on the rise in adults..but we have banned cigarettes everywhere. It obviously embarrasses people who don't do it more than it embarrasses people who do. Why ? It's a completely harmless thing yet it mortifies people. Oh they use the excuse " it's bad for the teeth." Well...they are THEIR teeth. Can't catch second hand thumb sucking like smoke, so what's the problem ? I bet a number of you drink caffeine and eat fatty foods but clogging your heart and screwing with your nervous system is'nt as bad as someone's teeth being slightly protruded ? Anyone here play with their hair ? Chew their fingernails ? Tap a pencil on your head ?

I think our society has gone way too far in deciding what other people should do with their own lives. If it embarrasses you, don't look. Obama has already outlawed clove cigarettes and is on the way to menthol. Should he mandate thumb guards too ? make pacifiers illegal ? Would chewing a straw be more accetible than thumb sucking. Why ?

I had a very good friend who sucked her thumb in public even as an adult. I'd sit beside her and smoke. To each his own ya know ?
