Sometimes the adverse effects are worst after the first dose. If things don't get better after a few days, he should go back to his doctor.

According to Micromedex the adverse effects are (and the percentages listed are the rate at which they occur) weight gain (up to 30%), constipation (5% to 13%), nausea (9% to 16%), vomiting (2% to 12%), akathisia (inner restlessness) [2 to 25%], dizziness (4 to 11%), extrapyramidial sign like tremors and rigidity and involuntary movements (2 to 27.3%), headache (12 to 30%), insomnia (8 to 19%), sedation (1 to 8 %), somnolence which is like sadness or very quiet keeps to themself (5 to 26.3%), tremor (5 to 11.8%), blurred vision (3 to 8%), anxiety (20%), restlessness (5 to 12%), fatigue (2 to 11%), prolonged QT interval (the heart rhythm is lengthened abnormally) [0.1 to 1%], plus rare ones like diabetic ketoacidosis, cerebrovascular accident, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, seizure (0.2 to 0.3%), tardive dyskinesia (another extrapyramidal sign that includes sticking the tounge out involuntarily and the head is cocked to one side against the shoulder and cannot be put up straight), transient ischemic attack, higher risk of suicide and suicdal behavior and rarely death. Because it can cause these effects be sure he is very hydrated and keep him out of extreme heat or strenuous exercise. It can also cause hypotension or low blood pressure. It does say that if aggresive behavior or worsening depression occur especially during the first few months of treatment that you should contact the doctor right away. Watch for sings of high blood sugar, which could also cause the irratic behavior, like extreme thirst, frequent urination, sweating that kind of stuff. If he faints definitely call 9-1-1. And no alcohol with the medication. I would definitely call the doctor though because if he isn't violent or irrational normally, it could very well be the medication and my guess is that it is. There are other medications to choose from some just don't work for some people. He doesn't have to suffer through side effects and as you can see some of them can be dangerous. Good Luck! Let me know what happens.
