Resolved Question

Accents in films?

I was watching Sliding Doors last night (don't bother) and Gwyneth's accent was irritating me, exactly like Renee Zelwegger's in Bridget Jones - the vowels are mostly right but it sounds like a train station announcer, 'Yes. I. Do. Love. You." (I know, train announcers rarely say that). Do Brit actors (Hugh Laurie in House, etc) sound authentically American (I know a lot definitely do not - Sean Bean is an embarassment), or do they sound as convincing as Dick Van Dyke's cockney in Mary Poppins? Also, if you have never been to England, do you think that all Brits speak like they've got a rod up their a$$?

Most accents don't come across as authentic to the native people of the regions where those accents and dialects are used.

Having grown up in Georgia, I can barely watch anything Hollywood turns out that is supposed to be on location here, to include: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Designing Women, and many others. Someone needs to tell the directors and actors that people do not sound anything like the people in Gone With The Wind, because that seems to be the movie they emulate.

Well you can imagine how it feels when you hear English and American actors trying to take off the Irish accent then. Haha! Its so drawn out its not even funny.

I do like Shreks accent though, always had a thing for Scottish accents.

I never knew Hugh Laurie wasn't American, which had me very impressed with his British accent in the Stuart Little movies.

Oh well, it's all make believe. Is ANY of it supposed to be real? Terrible accents seem to just go with the territory.
