All about this sentence ( the teacher ,tapped her ruler on her desk and said, "Anna, SIT STILL!")?

I couldn't picture this sentence ... could you explain it to me ?

what does (tapped) mean ? what is the present tense of (tapped) .

what does (ruler) mean ?

Katsuragi	Posted Sep 8th, 2009 at 8:38AM The teacher is strikeing (hitting her desk in a non-violent impateint way) her desk with a ruler( a yardstick or measureing stick.... has inches on one side and centimeters on the other... you know?) as a sort of way of getting Anna's attention who is apparently fidgeting and not paying attention or disrupting the class... KavookiSoldier	Posted Sep 8th, 2009 at 8:08AM present tense of tapped is 'tap', like knock. A ruler is a measuring device used in a classroom, usually plastic of wooden. So the teacher basically knocked a measuring device on the desk, to get Anna's attention then told her to sit still. yeah. Rated: +1Vote for this!
