All nighter

I have a night shift watching a sick relative and I am not allowed to fall asleep, I have no idea how to force myself to stay up sitting and watching him, and I can't sleep that afternoon, because there is too much for me to do, in other words I have to stay up basically 24 hours, I tried coffee, chocolate, I got up to 3 cups of coffee but it doesn't help! the only thing it does is make me go to the bathroom, I ALWAYS fall asleep, even though I so much don't want to:( I really can't! it's pathetic isn't it? I can't stay up a single night:( PLEASE HELP ME STAY UP, if you have any ideas I will really appreciate it!!!

If you are staying up 24 hours straight you are probably no use to your relative. If you must try to stay away have a spray bottle with ice cold water near by to give yourself an ice cold spray in the face or down your back.I used to use one when i drove a long distance from visiting a gf.

you should try to nap during the daytime hours before you start your shift...
when you get sleepy... do some jumping jacks or some type of exercise, sit ups.. push ups.. stretching... get your blood flowing
go outside for a min and breath in the night air
play upbeat music.. (if you have an Ipod or something where you can listen with ear phones)
Stay a bit on the cool side.. when your body is on the cold side it helps keep you awake.
Sit in a chair that isn't too comfy..
get up every 30 min or so and go get a drink of cold water or iced tea
    Chew gum
keep a light on by you .. or sit in a room that is well lit
Don't get too comfy with your clothes.. dont put your p.j's on.. this will signal your brain that it's sleepy time.
Log on to EP... keep busy writing stories, answering questions, writing letters.. keep your mind busy
Watch a movie or some tv
    Good Luck

Thank you LC, lots of good advice! I can't have anything electronic with me though, no iPod,mp3, or laptop, just food, drinks and books(the old fashion ones with page that you actually have to turn LOL) and I don't have time to sleep during the day:( I'm not home most of the day, but I will try whatever I can. THANK YOU <3

I've done midnights as a caregiver, you cannot stay up all night and all day, it's not possible. You must get some sleep every day. If your relatives know that you are not sleeping during the day, they are not being realistic.

No one can stay awake continuously without proper sleep. You have got to get some sleep, otherwise your health is going to suffer, and you will be no good to anyone.
You must have someone who can share the responsibility with you.
What you don't say, is why you have to care for this person 24/7, on your own

it's not 24/7, it's once in a while not every day!
